i woke up to see annabeth tacking into the wind.

we slept in shifts. she slept first, and then me. i just woke up. percy was still knocked out.

i sat up, and annabeth sent me a smile. i took a swig of dr pepper. i was hungry. there wasn't much we salvaged, but i'll take what i can get. i held the bottle out to annabeth, and she took some.

i looked out to the sea. now that we were in the sea of monsters, the water was a bright green. it glittered. lighter than percy's eyes, though. more like hydra-acid.

the wind was fresh, and clean. but it carried a metallic scent. like a thunderstorm was going to start.

i took another sip of the carbonated drink as percy woke up. before i could warn him not to, he tried to sit up.

he gripped the bench, and his eyes were glassy for a few seconds.

"rest," i told him, without moving my eyes from the water. "you're going to need it."

"tyson...?" percy asked immediately.

annabeth shook her head, "percy, i'm really sorry."

we were all silent while the waves tossed us up and down.

"he may have survived," i said halfheartedly. i really wished he did. "i mean, fire can't kill him."

waves lapped the boat. i held out the dr pepper for percy and he took some.

annabeth told him how i had to dive in the water, and grab him. his backpack still had hermes' multivitamins. most of the other things floated away. we managed to salvage a few grey sailors shirts, hermes' (now empty) thermos, a ziploc full of ambrosia, and a few more dr peppers.

apollo was not making this quest any easier. no matter which way we turned, the sun seemed to shine straight into my eyes. we took turns sipping from the dr pepper, shading ourselves with the sail as best we could. and we talked about percy's latest dream of grover.
