three weeks into school
end-september
i looked up from my blueprints, and the model i made.
it was a mini version of dum-e. i needed another helping hand in my lab, so i built a mini dum-e. i named it butterfingers.
"hey!"
i jumped half a foot in the air. i turned my head, to see annabeth standing there in a rainbow.
"dear gods, give me a second." i told her, running to my door. it was partially open. sticking my head out the door, i looked down the hallway. there was no one.
i closed and locked the door, before returning to the iris-message.
"you scared me half to death." i told her.
she shrugged. "you do it all the time. i found a way to get you back. what are you even working on? you didn't notice me, and i've been here for so long."
"i needed an extra hand in the lab, so i built a mini dum-e. his name's butterfingers. but, he's not completely finished yet." i told her.
"don't you have enough projects from school?" she asked.
"that's the thing!" i exclaimed, throwing my hands up. "it's too slow. i already know most of this because of my dad. so they've put me on fast track. i don't have to go to my lectures, but i can if i want to. the teachers send me the highlighted parts that they think i need to watch. i'm basically doing a whole bunch of first and second year work together. they're giving me the projects, and worksheets, but they're so easy. i'm literally flying through everything. and i'm the youngest person here!"
she laughed, "you're the one that wanted to start post-secondary."
"hey, at least i'll get my degree before you." i told her.
she laughed. "so whatcha do to pass time? party? or—"
"i'm going to cut you off right there. i haven't been to even one party. there's been a few, though. i have to live on campus. but, i have been doing something pretty cool."
"spill."
"alright. get ready. J.A.R.V.I.S. open up my private research sector." i told my a.i.
"voice activation confirmed. opening file: the labyrinth." the a.i. called back.
i turned off the lights, and closed the blinds. swiping through the holographic screens i picked one of them up, and dragged it in front of the iris-message.
"i found a book in the library about the labyrinth. daedalus's creation. they didn't have a lot of information on him, and his death. or his maze. so, i took whatever chiron taught us, what the mythology books have said, and i started planning. with the help of J.A.R.V.I.S. i created this," i told her.
i expanded my arms, making the hologram larger. she gasped.
"this is a simulation. if we have a large enough room, i could actually make this life-sized and actually have it react in a similar way to the actual maze." i explained.
"that's incredible," she told me.
"i know!" i exclaimed. "i've been working on this for a few weeks. it's not perfect, but it's something."
"when do you work on all of this? don't you have a roommate?" she asked.
"nope." i told her, turning the lights on, and putting the hologram away.
"what? why not?" she asked.
"they have some single dorms, and i got preference because of my referrals." i told her.
"was your dad your referral?" she asked with a hand on her hip.
"noo..." i trailed off. "well, yes. but it was tony stark and colonel james rhodes. i got referrals from two of mit's most famous alumni."
she laughed.
we spent the next hour or so just talking about anything and everything.
