the maze
end of march
"this is freakishly accurate," clarisse shivered as she saw the holographic maze.
i shrugged, "i used a bunch of research notes to make the hologram. i still feel like it's missing something. but i'm not sure."
clarisse had kicked her cabinmates out of the cabin. the beds had been pushed off to the side, and the entire cabin was available for us to use. we transformed it into a holographic version of the labyrinth.
chiron called me back to camp. he wanted me to help clarisse. annabeth also pitched in from time to time. my dad was still working on his boots and i made sure not to let anyone know anything about the mark ii armor we were working on.
"lemme see," clarisse muttered.
"you sure?" i asked her.
i knew her experience in the labyrinth wasn't pretty, but she looked confident enough. i could feel the nervousness coming off of her, but she seemed determined.
"yeah, i'll let you know what's missing."
i nodded and watched her try out the hologram. it was designed almost like one way glass. i could see through the hologram on the outside, but she couldn't see out from the inside.
i watched her turn a few corners, and back step a few times.
"drop the hologram," she told me after taking the same turn three times.
J.A.R.V.I.S. complied and shut it down.
clarisse's eyes looked hazy, as if she were thinking of something else, a different experience. "a mind." she muttered.
"huh?"
she looked at me, and her eyes focused. she cleared her throat, "your hologram's missing a mind."
i must've looked really confused because clarisse snorted.
"the lab—" she froze. taking a deep breath, she continued, "the maze, it had a mind. like it — it was trying to confuse you. this doesn't seem as alive, but it's still pretty accurate."
i furrowed my brows and pulled the hologram up again. i walked closer to it, and examined it. "so the maze, it, it was like... artificial intelligence?"
the labyrinth seemed much more interesting to me now.
clarisse tilted her head. "i mean, i guess. it wasn't really, like a mind, more like, it was smart. it seemed alive at parts. knew how to trick you."
i nodded, "give me a minute."
"what'd you do to it?" she asked me.
clarisse agreed to try the holographic version of the labyrinth one more time. the ares cabin tried to get in a few minutes ago, but we kicked them out.
they were now camped outside, away from the land mines. (they were also on the lookout for travis and connor. they were talking about a prank involving pink hair dye, and green glitter glue. feathers may or may not be involved)
"J.A.R.V.I.S.," i answered simply, taking another sip of my redbull.
clarisse raised an eyebrow and made a face at me, "what?"
"J.A.R.V.I.S. is an a.i. system. dad made him a while back, and now he does pretty much everything. he has a mind. evolving, and changing with the amount of human interaction he gets. he's smart enough to run this program, changing it according to your moves."
clarisse looked impressed, "that's pretty smart."
"why, thank you."
