❝tell me a story about how the sun loved the moon so much, he died every night to let her breathe❞

⚠️TW⚠️

I BIT MY lower lip as a light knock came from my door. After no answer from me, the knob twisted open and without looking up I knew Prince was sticking his head into my room.

"Cara mia?" He spoke, creaking the door slightly as he tried to quietly enter my room.

"Prince, I'm still awake." I sighed, sitting up and facing him.

He stood there in his six foot something glory, wearing casual clothes that consisted of a plain black t-shirt and matching pants.

I'd have to admit, seeing him in something other than a suit was odd but refreshing. It was a subtle reminder that he was human.

"Did I upset you?" He asked, his accent as thick as ever. I shook my head and pat the mattress besides me.

"I'm sorry, I just haven't told anyone that in a long time. I just need a minute."

"It's been three hours." He stated. I gave him a look and he froze. "Take your time, I just want you to know you can talk to me about anything."

I gave him a sad smile and he leaned over and kissed my cheek before whispering quietly,

"Always."

A few hours earlier..

"My family?" I reiterated, looking away from him.

He must have sensed my discomfort because he rested his hand on my arm, gently rubbing it up and down before sliding his hand down to mine and capturing it. His warmth made me look back up at him.

"You don't have to tell me." He whispered quietly. With us being the only ones around for miles, I could clearly hear his attempt to sooth me.

He says that but he obviously wants me to, otherwise the topic wouldn't have been brought up.

"I want to tell you." I said, slightly confident. It almost sounded like I was trying to convince myself more than him. "I need to tell you."

He stayed quiet as he waited for me to continue, watching me intently. My heart started beating faster in my chest, memories flashing through my mind as my hand instinctively reached forward. My hand latched onto the coat of Princes' suit, giving it a tight squeeze as I opened my mouth.

"When I was younger, my mom and dad were happy. They seemed happy, happy enough to live in the same house together, happy enough to stay married whether it was for my sake. Happy enough to try and have another kid." My grip tightened as my decision to start from the beginning made tears well up in my eyes.

"What I didn't know was that my dad was a raging alcoholic and that every time I went to school or was sound asleep, he'd beat my mom. I was young though, so I never noticed enough to question what was going on."

I stopped and took a deep breath, taking my hand away from Prince to wipe my eyes. I was determined not to cry through this story, because if I did then I would never want to talk about it again.

Prince took a step towards me, about to say something like 'you don't have to continue' or 'forget I even asked' to try and make me feel better. As a result I took two steps back and held up my hand, making him stop his movements.
