When Daniel returned a while later with one large plate of spaghetti, you didn’t even have to question what was going on anymore. You knew exactly what Niall had planned. Niall flashed you a toothy grin from across the table as Daniel politely asked, “Is there anything else I can get for you two?”
Niall shook his head and answered, “I think we’re good. Thanks a lot.” Daniel faintly smiled before disappearing. You stared at Niall, raising your eyebrows. He laughed and told you, “We’re gonna be like those two dogs in Lady and the Tramp. Except we’re humans.”
“Right,” You sarcastically said with a giggle, before mumbling, “Fine, let’s try it.” Niall bit his lip and held his fist in the air, celebrating his success. You grabbed your fork, but gasped when Niall went in with his face, grabbing a noodle between his teeth and sucking it into his mouth. “Niall!” You gasped, “Use your fork! Here!” You picked his fork up for him and held it out to him, but he shook his head. You stared at him in disbelief. Is it an Irish tradition or something to eat without using utensils?
“That’s no fun,” He told you, while chewing the noodle. “Besides, the dogs didn’t use forks. Why should we?”
“Because we’re humans, like you said. Humans eat spaghetti with forks, Niall. Oh my god, that old guy is staring at you. Niall, stop. Please,” You begged, covering the side of your face with your hand. You were definitely embarrassed now. However, you’d be lying if you said you weren’t also having a little fun watching Niall eat like an animal. Your pleas only seemed to encourage Niall more as he added obnoxious slurping noises. He pulled away with sauce all over his face and a long noodle hanging out of his mouth. He settled his eyes on you, wiggling his eyebrows as he sucked the noodle into his mouth, complete with sound effects. You laughed and slapped your hand to your forehead.
Niall reached across the table and nudged your arm, saying, “C’mon, try it. Just grab it with your teeth and then slurp it up. It works pretty good.” He moved his arm and accidentally bumped your water, sending the glass over the edge of the table. It landed on the floor with a shatter, and absolute silence filled the entire restaurant. Literally every pair of eyes was on you and Niall. Even the waiters had stopped to look. Niall’s eyes widened and he looked at you with a guilty expression, before asking, “Were you going to drink that?”
It wasn’t long before you and Niall were kicked out of the restaurant. With your hands linked again, he led you outside into the chilly night air. You shivered when you first stepped outside, and Niall instantly shrugged his suit jacket off and placed it over your shoulders. You smiled up at him and said, “Thanks. I wasn’t expecting it to get this cold.” He pulled you into his side; an effort to keep you warm and be close to you at the same time. You crossed the same street that you took to get there with just as much caution as the first time.
Along the walk, Niall told you about himself and how he came to be in New York. He told you about his family, and about how his parents didn’t really agree with him being there. He said he hadn’t heard any word from them since he arrived—not even an email asking him if he made it there safely. He was silent for a while, and you felt bad for him. But then he picked up talking about his brother, and he said he was lucky to have him. He said he was really the only person that supported him. He said his brother was, in a way, his best friend. And then he got talking about how he was a lonely kid, but he said it didn’t always bother him very much. He said everyone was the same, and that nobody really had any personality. He said everyone was set on having really successful children, and that was all that mattered. He told you that his parents weren’t any different. But then, he said something that especially caught your attention. “This was my first date,” He told you, “My first date, ever. I never—I never thought I’d even find someone to go out with me, even if it’s just once. I always thought I’d be alone forever, because that’s all I’ve ever known.”
