You kept your eyes on the shiny black road ahead of you as a light rain drizzled down over you. It was late at night and the only source of light was the streetlights that reflected on the road. Your arms were folded over your chest as you walked with sturdy and determined steps. Rain drops splashed under your step. The night air was cool and dried your tears in a sense that made you feel refreshed. You inhaled long breaths through your nose, keeping your lips locked in a straight and emotionless line on your face. You felt somewhat empty, like a part of you was missing. It was true. You’d been with Niall for over three years and there was hardly a moment that you weren’t with him. So, as you walked along the wet road, you felt yourself missing him, even if it was wrong.
You wanted to use this walk as an opportunity to clear your mind and you had hoped to make it through without thinking about anything. However, walking with a blank mind is nearly impossible. Your mind seemed to race along with your steps, so much so that you found yourself walking quicker and quicker as more and more thoughts flooded through your head. Your steps that were once confident now seemed angry and you felt angry tears pricking at your eyes. You let your tears fall. There was no need to try to stop them. No one was there to see you cry, and even if anyone had been, you had no intentions of controlling your emotions.
A cold wind blew against you, and like a slap to the face, it brought everything out of you. You spat curse words out of your mouth, all directed toward Niall. You cursed him and everything he stood for. You cursed your relationship with him, and the way he once made you feel. You cursed yourself for ever trusting him, for ever falling. You cursed his smile and how it always made you crumble. You cursed the way he touched you; so gentle at times, and so harsh at others. You cursed the way he kissed you; hungrily after a long day, and slowly when people were watching. You cursed the way that you always sprung back to him. Your relationship with him was by far the rockiest you’d ever had, yet he always had a way of pulling you back. You cursed yourself for ever doing that, and promised yourself that you wouldn’t do it this time. But you’ve said that before, haven’t you? Haven’t you said all of this before? What makes this time any different from the last time you stormed away from him?
Words were uncontrollably spilling out of your mouth, and warm tears continued to steadily stream down your face until you couldn’t tell if your face was wet from the tears or if it was the rain. You cried until your eyes felt tired, and you slowly blinked your tears away. Your body began to shake and you didn’t know if it was because of the cold or not. The rain had stayed light for most of the time, and now it only misted over you. But you had been out long enough that your body was wet. Your clothes dripped and any of your skin that was exposed was covered in raindrops.
Until now, the only thing that broke the silence was your own piercing voice. But that changed when you heard a car approaching. In the dark, the headlights shone on your back and you refused to turn and look. The car slowed behind you, and you knew it was Niall. You picked up the pace, hoping he’d get the hint and leave you alone. But you knew better. That’s not the way Niall is. Sure, he’d get your hint, but he wasn’t about to listen to it. He knew, in this particular moment, that you wanted nothing to do with him. But that didn’t mean anything to him. He wanted something to do with you, and that’s all he thought about. What Niall wanted, Niall got, and he had always had you wrapped around his finger like that.
You were walking so quickly that you were almost running. The car followed you for a while, as if testing you, before it rolled to a slow stop behind you. You heard the engine shut off, followed by the sound of the door shutting. You heard the footsteps that then followed, as they slapped against the wet ground. You kept your eyes ahead of you, and walked like that with the footsteps following you for so long that you began to question whether it was really Niall or not. You would continue to question it, though, because you refused to turn around, in case it was him.
