“Hey, Leighanne,” Niall said, grabbing your attention. Your head popped up and you waited for him to continue. “Can we talk about something?”
You nodded, folding your hands in your lap. “Of course, Niall. What is it?”
Niall was sitting on his bed with his legs crossed while you were sat in a swivel chair near the desk in his bedroom. “Well,” He nervously began. “Everybody hates me.” He adjusted his glasses and inhaled a shaky breath.
Your eyebrows furrowed and you leaned forward, shaking your head. “What?! I don’t hate you!” You pointed out.
“Fine, but everybody else does! I’m a nerd, and everyone knows it. Have you seen the way the jocks point and laugh at me?” Niall’s head fell as he spoke.
You sighed. It was true; everyday a new person would laugh at Niall, or tease him because he’s clearly a nerd. You had been friends with Niall since you were first learning to walk, so the fact that he was a nerd didn’t bother you at all. But it was hard to watch him fall in front of everyone. The hardest thing was to watch as some stupid kid punched Niall in the stomach, or tripped him down the hallway. You had always wanted to step in, but you were fearful. You felt like you weren’t very strong yourself.
“Niall, you’re just a very smart young man. You’re above everyone else. Just think of it like that,” You tried, sneaking a small smile in there somewhere.
But Niall just shrugged before a surge of anger rushed through him, and he pounded his fist down. He ripped his glasses form his face, throwing them against a wall. Luckily, his glasses were nearly indestructible, and they didn’t even break. Instead, his glasses just slid to the ground with a small clatter.
“Calm down!” You pushed yourself off of the chair and joined him on the bed. The bed shifted under your weight as you slid over next to him. You brushed a couple strands of shaggy hair away from his face while feeling his warm forehead. “Are you feeling okay?” You asked, pressing the back of your hand to his clammy cheek.
He shook his head. “Nobody respects me like you do. Everybody else just treats me like trash. Why can’t everybody be as sweet as you?” He turned, and his eyes met with yours.
You smiled. “No, Niall. Why can’t everybody be as sweet as you?” You turned away, looking out the nearest window. Without moving, you continued. “I’m sorry, Niall. I’m sorry for never standing up for you like I should have. I’m sorry for being so weak and just standing back and watching while idiot after idiot had their turn at you. I’m just…so sorry for never stepping in when I should have. You deserve so much better than the way those people treat you.”
It was silent until suddenly you felt a sweaty hand wrap around your own. You turned around to see Niall smiling gently at you, and he held your hand in his. His eyes were soft, and he looked so touched at what you said.
“Ya know, I’m actually quite lucky,” He smirked. “Nobody else’s best friend is as great as mine.”
You bit your lip and grinned. “Thanks, Nialler. But, you still look a little uneasy. Would you like some water?” You squeezed his hand before getting up and heading for his kitchen. “I’ll just get you some water and maybe a little snack or something. I’ll be right back, okay?”
He nodded, smiling at you as you made your way down to Niall’s kitchen. You knew your way around his house so well that you could navigate your way around it with your eyes closed. You reached for a glass and poured some cold water in it, slipping a couple ice cubes in the glass, as well. You opened the sliding pantry door, chuckling and shaking your head at all of the snacks that Niall had. You grabbed a bag of microwaveable popcorn and quickly popped it in the microwave, adding some salt and butter, just the way Niall liked it, before bringing the popcorn and the water upstairs to him.
You lightly knocked on his bedroom door, and found your spot next to him on the bed. You handed him the glass of water, watching intently as he took a quick sip of it. Once he set the glass down on the nightstand next to him, you passed him the bag of popcorn after taking a handful for yourself. “Here ya go,” You said quietly.
He stuffed a handful of popcorn in his mouth, and moved closer to you. You sat giggling while Niall realized he may have tried to eat too much popcorn at once. When he finally finished, he turned to you, offering you some more. You shook your head and sang a song in your head when Niall interrupted you.
“Leighanne,” He said softly. “You’re always so nice to me. When I’m having a bad day, which is quite frequently, you always manage to put a smile on my face. You can lighten me, no matter what kind of awful mood I’m in. I can trust you, and you’re always there, even when everyone else isn’t. You’re still my friend, even when everyone else has already given up on me. And I can’t thank you enough…and, I think I love you.”
You couldn’t help the smile and the small blush that crept across your face as Niall reached for your hand again. You knotted your hand in his and leaned against him, resting your head on his shoulder, and your legs were tangled with his.
“I think I love you too, Niall Horan,” You smiled.
He lightly brushed his nose against yours, and a sweet smile was spread across his face.
“Hey, Leighanne,” He whispered, still holding your hand. “Would you mind handing me my glasses?”
You both giggled and you nodded, reaching for his glasses that were still resting on the floor.
** Nerdy Niall! Woohoo! By the way, you didn’t tell me your name, but I found it on your profile. I hope that’s okay. And I also hope you liked your imagine!**
