Love in Winter

You mentally slapped yourself as you shivered. You hugged yourself in an attempt to preserve the little body heat that you had left in the blistering cold. You were wearing a sweater, but you didn’t have a coat or a hat or anything to keep you warm, seeing as the snow decided to fall unannounced. The snow was falling slowly and rather gracefully, neatly blanketing the ground, but it was too cold outside for you to enjoy the scenery. Your steps quickened by the minute, as you became more and more eager to get home where you knew it would be nice and warm. The only thing you were interested in at the moment was curling up at home with a cup of hot chocolate.

You could feel the cold nipping at your face and any part of your skin that was exposed to the air. Your fingers were almost numb and you tried to cover them with the sleeves of your sweater. You were about ready to scream in utter frustration when you heard a voice from behind you.

“Excuse  me,” A little voice spoke up, and you turned to see a boy, whom looked almost as cold as you, approaching. His nose was red as were his cheeks, and he had snowflakes stuck on his eyelashes. “Where’s your coat, darlin’? You’ve got to be freezin’.” He spoke with the type of fresh accent that had you leaning in for more.

You shrugged and lamely answered, “I wasn’t expecting snow.”

The boy had caught up to you by now, and you were walking side-by-side along the snow-covered sidewalk. He watched his breath evaporate in front of him before coming to a sudden stop. “Here,” He said as he wiggled himself out of his own coat. He held it out to you, nodding toward you as if telling you to take it.

You smiled, but shook your head. “Please, keep it. It’s my fault for not bringing one,” You told him.

However, this determined boy was not willing to take ‘no’ for an answer. “Don’t worry about it,” He mumbled as he threw the coat over your shoulders. You flashed him another little smile as you slid into his warm coat, lifting some of the chill off of your body almost instantaneously. He stuffed his hands in the pockets of his jeans and shivered as the cold air bit at him.

“At least let me buy you a cup of coffee. There’s a little café down the street and around the corner,” You offered. You wanted to repay him for lending you his coat, and you also didn’t want to let him get away without at least getting his name…and maybe his phone number, with a little luck.

His lips curled up into a warm smile, and he glanced at you while saying, “I’d actually really love that.”

There was silence between the two of you until you got to the end of the street, and you turned the corner. The café was in sight now, and the boy suddenly spoke up, “I suppose I should introduce myself. I’m Niall. I’m from Ireland.” He extended his hand for a handshake, which you gladly took.

“Pleasure to meet you, Niall from Ireland. I’m (Y/N),” You said with a giggle.

You and Niall found an empty table with two chairs at it in the corner of the café, as if it was just waiting for you two. There was a small argument over who was paying, but you finally convinced him to let you pay this time by saying with a smirk on your face, “You can pay for our next date, Niall from Ireland.”
