You reached for the remote and paused the movie that you were watching as you heard a loud knock on your door. Bringing yourself to your feet, you wandered over to the door with a confused expression on your face. It was late at night and you weren’t expecting anyone. In fact, the only reason you were still awake was because you couldn’t sleep.

You hesitantly pulled the door open to see Niall standing behind it. Your shoulders fell and you let out a sigh of relief. He was leaning against the doorframe as if he couldn’t hold himself up. He rubbed at his eyes and yawned without even noticing that you had opened the door. You giggled and that’s when he finally noticed you. He waved shyly and continued to stand in the doorway. Your eyes scanned over his figure and you concluded that he was either really tired or really drunk. You stepped aside, inviting him inside. He blinked his eyes rapidly, as if trying to keep them open, and then wobbled into your house. And that’s when you made your decision. He was really drunk.

You shut the door after him and he flinched at the slight noise. You crossed your arms over your chest as he stood slumped over with his hands in his pockets. “Alright, what’s up?” You asked as you stared at him, taking in his appearance. His hair was a mess, his clothes were wrinkled, and his face was flushed. The part that interested you, though, was that the area around his eyes was red and irritated, and his eyes were shiny, as if he’d been crying.

“I don’t know what I’m doing anymore,” He said, sounding so sincere that you wondered for a second if he was sober. You stopped wondering, however, when he attempted to take a step forward and almost tripped over his own feet. He groaned in frustration and sent a strong kick into the closest wall, throwing his fists in the air. You’d known Niall for long enough to know that he could sometimes get angry and aggressive when he was really drunk, so you grabbed his arm to stop him from doing anything he’d later regret. He stopped and looked straight into your eyes as you held onto his arm to stabilize him.  He seemed lost, like parts of him were missing. You knew that the best place for him to be at the moment was with you, so instead of kicking him out, you guided him toward a chair. Besides, he came to you for a reason, which you were soon to discover.

The very second that he sat down, he leaned over and placed his face in his hands. You patted his back before excusing yourself to pour him a glass of water, knowing he’d need it. You could tell already that this was going to be an even longer night for the two of you. When you returned with the water, Niall was full-out sobbing. Tears were uncontrollably pouring out of his eyes so quickly that he couldn’t wipe them away fast enough. His body shook as he cried and he reached up with a shaky hand to wipe at his runny nose. He looked so horrible. Your heart hurt for him as he lost his composure in front of you. You set the water down and kneeled down beside him, placing your hand on his back. You rubbed soothing circles into his back and placed your other hand on his knee.

“Niall,” You whispered. He sniffled and sucked in a sharp breath. “You’re okay, it’s okay. You can stay with me tonight, alright? You’re going to be fine. Would you like some water?  I brought some water for you. You should drink something other than alcohol.”

He nodded and swallowed hard as he wiped at his eyes. His tears were slowly coming to a stop. You handed him the glass of water and he took it in his shaky hands, bringing it to his lips. He swallowed down the entire glass without even pausing. When he was done, he set the glass aside and looked down at you. His eyes were dry now and out of tears. He blinked slowly and kept his stare on you. You massaged his thigh before asking, “Better now? Do you want more water?”
