'God, it was late.' Lexa watched the hour hand scroll past the '1' on the clock.

1:15 AM. It was well past midnight and she was still here, staring at the stupid files uploaded on her computer. 'That's it.' She was done for the night. There was no way she could do anything with her coffee-drowned brain.

She turned off the computer, grabbing her things and tossing them into her bag.

She could use some sleep. She would love some sleep. Or even just a break. Anything. But mainly sleep.

...

At least a ride home in the middle of the night meant no traffic.

...

She couldn't help but take the side streets. It was just too tempting to get away from the glaring lights of corporate America.

...

She waited at the stoplight right in front of her favorite park.

A young couple walked across the street and sat down at the bench. She couldn't help but smile. Thought about the way she used to be so jealous of people like them. How pointless that jealousy was. Because, if only her younger self knew who she stumbled upon, she'd have never felt such a thing. Because Clarke was so-

Green light.

'perfect.' She still finished the sentence.

...

She couldn't help but watch the few lone people walking by the streets, a few by the stores, a couple walking or laying at the park, either laughing or drinking. All teens and young adults. Half of them shouldn't even be holding a bottle in their hands. But she knew all too well the world worked like that anyway.

They tended to stay in groups of two or four. Except for one person sitting away from the crowd, on a bench.

She neared the last person as she drove further along the street.

A girl.

A familiar-looking girl.

She slowed her car. It was hard to tell for sure in the dark but-

'Madi?'

What was she doing here all alone at night? Why would Clarke allow that? There was no way she would- Was she crying?? There was no way that could be Madi, right? She had to be seeing things-

The girl looked up at the car, widening her eyes and getting up from the bench, sprinting into the park, away from her.

'Madi. That was definitely Madi. But what- why??' Lexa stayed still for a moment, completely lost in what she saw and what to think of it. Maybe she was just seeing things. It was late and she was tired. It was probably nothing. Right?

'Fuck.' There was no way she was going to rest now.

'Fuck it.' She parked the car and headed into the park, going through her contacts and scrolling to Clarke.

A bunch of messages. Sent hours ago.

'Shit.' She opened it.

Lexa
