A/N: Hi! I actually cannot believe it's been over a year!! I don't really have an excuse except that I kinda stopped writing Lumity in favour of focusing on other aspects of the show and stuff. Whoopsie.
Here's this thing I wrote in like 2 hours! (Just a warning that I haven't edited this, so if there are errors feel free to point them out!) Enjoy :)
Nothing was worse than keeping a secret that could destroy everything.
Amity had learned this time and time again—from trying to be friends with Willow to her love for Azura and the library, as stupid and childish as she logically knew it was. The first had stripped her of any happiness she'd made for herself and taken Willow down with it. The second had been exploited by the twins and very nearly gotten both her and that human girl killed.
This was worse.
If her mom had been mad about her being friends with Willow all those years ago, back before she'd fully donned her "little miss perfect" persona, she was going to be LIVID now. At least Willow had been a witch. Luz, on the other hand...
Titan, even the thought of her name made those embarrassingly sappy feelings roar in her chest again. Luz was kind, and brave, and always tried to do the right thing even when she messed up. Especially when she messed up. Her voice was so bright, her eyes so captivating, her smile radiant...
But none of that would matter to her mother. Though she'd never explicitly said it, Amity knew her mom wanted her to marry someone wealthy one day. It was in the way she obviously disapproved of anyone with lower status, the not-so-subtle comments she'd make about other kids around her age in the same class as them. She'd even heard her mom try to nudge her towards Boscha before, of all people. Odalia wouldn't care how intrinsically good Luz was, or resourceful with her magic. She'd disapprove on sight—if not because she was learning under the Owl Lady, then definitely because she was a human. Amity knew, realistically, that her mom would never, ever allow any kind of relationship between them to happen.
So she tried to stay away, stick closer to her popular friends. They may not have been Amity's favourite people to be around, but they were safe, they were comfortable, and that was enough. She threw herself into her studies, ignoring her siblings when they tried to knock on her door to ask what was up. Even after all the changes they'd been through together, even when the three of them were getting better at being good siblings (and even when she had a feeling they suspected what was going on); Amity couldn't tell them. It was a sort of gut feeling, a mounting dread at the thought of anyone finding out about her crush, the instinctual knowledge that something terrible would happen if she were to ever be found out.
She tried to stay away—ignoring the sound of Luz's laughter ringing in the lunchroom, the glimpses she caught of her hair in a crowded hallway, the way her heart buzzed in her chest with every notion of her presence. On multiple occasions, she got lost in thought, in preventing herself from doing something stupid like going up and talking to her, only to tune back in to questioning glares from her friends. I'm a little bit tired today, she would say. I'm worried about the upcoming test. They would all shrug it off as "typical Amity" and then move on, forget about her in favour of whatever new subject they sprung on.
For Amity, though, it never really went away.
The truth is that she was exhausted; from late night spent bent over her desk with her head in her hands as usual, but also from suppressing the thoughts that attacked her whenever she set eyes on the human, from keeping herself as far away from Luz as possible, and from worrying about what would happen if she got caught.
