Zion's POV
Johnny packs his Eagle Fang van for the long trip to Mexico. I'm not thrilled to be going in that, but it saves us from taking my car.
I don't know how long we'll be gone, but I do know that I want to get away. I want a break from the karate violence and drama. I want to be far away from Silver. I want to be with Robby. I want to be safe. I want to distance myself so I can't be directly responsible for more kids getting hurt.
Teaching and endorsing the way of the fist to Ella and Kenny and all the others is one of the worst things I've ever done. I never want to get close to doing that again.
As I grab the last of my stuff, I slip a lightweight pocketknife into my black combat boots for safe keeping.
"Last chance to back out," Robby mutters as we load our luggage into the back.
I give him a glance, "You know you don't have to come if you don't want to."
"I'll go anywhere with you, as long as this is what you want," he says confidently.
I see Johnny eyeing us as we have our little conversation. This will be an interesting trip with him here.
"It is. You know how important Miguel is to me," I remind him.
"Uh," Johnny interrupts us, "you guys have your passports, right?"
"In my bag," I clutch my purse. "Me and Robby's both."
"Mine is in my pocket," Johnny taps his pocket and his face falls. "Shit."
"Other pocket, Dad," Robby says awkwardly.
Johnny feels the other side of his pants and sighs in relief. "Thanks." He gets into the driver's seat, ready to go.
"Sit up front with him," I nudge Robby with my elbow. "Bond."
"Are you sure?" Robby wonders.
"I'll probably pass out in the back, anyway," I assure him. "Or, watch something on Hulu."
"Okay, thanks," he half-smiles before getting into the passenger's seat.
I cram myself into the back. My sweaty thighs stick to the seat. Then, I realize the bad smell of the van. Gross.
"Everyone has everything, right?" Johnny asks as he turns on the ignition.
"Yeah," I say. "Let's do this."
I look over at Robby and still feel badly for dragging him along with us, but it wouldn't be the same without him here.
"Uh, I need gas first," Johnny frowns.
Robby looks back at me and rolls his eyes with a smile at his dad. Well, this trip may be longer than I thought.
