Chapter Negative Eight: Narcissism

"What do you say, when tears are streaming down your face in front of everyone you know? And what do you do when the one who means the most to you is the one who didn't show?"

Zion's POV

"Zion!" I wake up to a pounding on my door accompanied by my mom's voice. "Zion!"

I jolt awake, looking beside me to see Robby sitting up, alert, as well.

"What?" I ask groggily, trying to fix my vision so it's less blurry.

"Why is your door locked?" my mom asks in an angry tone of voice.

"I..." I look at Robby and he bites his lip, showing me he's done this. "Hold on!"

I get up and drag Robby over to the closet, shutting him inside of it and putting a finger to my lips.

"Zion," he whispers and I shake my head, signaling for him to be quiet. "Clothes," he tosses a random, large hoodie at me and I slip it over my head.

"Thanks," I say in a panic as my mom yells once more.

"Zion Athena Ambrose, you know I hate when you lock doors, so open it right now!"

I rush over and throw the door open only to see my mom fuming in anger.

"Why was your door locked?"

"Why are you screaming at me at..." I turn to look at the clock, "six am???"

"I'm going to the Farmer's Market and I didn't want you to forget," she says.

"You told me last night," I rub my eyes once more as a yawn escapes my lips. "That's why you woke me up?"

"Please, I'm the one who has to help out your father today and bring him something of substance so he doesn't get sick from the hospital food," she sighs, reminding me once again of her long to-do list.

"Ironic," I roll my eyes. I am sooo not a morning person.

"Don't roll your eyes at me," she snaps. Okay, so she's in the strict mode this morning. It's either one extreme or the other.

"Sorry," I glance down at my feet, hating getting in trouble with her. I'm not even a bad child, I don't think. She just loves yelling at me.

"Clean the dishes today for me? Life has just been exhausting for me recently," she asks and I nod, as usual. "See you later, then," she says in satisfaction before walking towards downstairs.

I sigh and move to close the door, turning back to Robby in the process, "Okay, you can-"

"Why was your door locked?" Mom turns around, her angry tone evidently resurfacing. I was so close to not getting in trouble for that.

"Um..." I look down at the hoodie I'm wearing, "I slept naked."

"Hm?" she looks at me in confusion at the odd answer.

"Sorry. Won't lock it again," I rock back and forth on my heels nervously, desperately hoping she'll buy it. I really don't want to get hit this morning.
