TEJASSWI POV
My back ached from bending down to make numerous beds. My feet were sore from walking around, delivering bland, tasteless meals to each room. The silence in the halls felt oppressive, broken only by the sound of my footsteps echoing against the cold, cement floors. Most of the patients were likely in the dining room, eating lunch, or engaged in other activities. I had just delivered the last meal when a co-worker, Adaa, approached me.
Adaa was more experienced than I was and knew this place well. I had only been working at St. Thomas Mental Hospital for three months, mostly as a nurse, but the heavy security made it feel more like a prison.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" Adaa asked, her voice full of curiosity.
"Umm, my job" I said, a little annoyed by the interruption.
"Haven’t you heard? A new guy is coming. Let’s go take a look that who is he" she said excitedly.
I raised an eyebrow. "Why? We get new patients all the time. What’s the big deal today?"
Adaa’s eyes gleamed. "This guy... he killed three girls"
I froze, feeling a chill run down my spine. "What? Are you serious?" My voice was barely above a whisper.
"Yes, He’s coming here, and we’re going to miss it if you don’t hurry up" Adaa grabbed my arm and started pulling me toward the entrance.
We stepped outside just as a large police van pulled up in front of the hospital. My heart raced with anticipation. What did this man look like? How old would he be? Would he be as monstrous as the stories suggested?
The two police officers stepped out first, opening the back doors of the van. I felt a rush of nervous energy in my chest. The officers reached inside and pulled out the man, one gripping each of his arms. His head was lowered, hiding his face from view, but I could already tell he was tall and lean. He wore the hospital’s standard blue jumpsuit, unflattering and plain, but his posture stood out—confident, almost regal.
As he made his way up the stone steps, I couldn’t look away. Suddenly, the man lifted his head, and our eyes met for a split second. My breath caught in my throat. His features were sharp and striking. Despite the grim situation, there was no denying it, He Was Handsome.
It was a jarring contrast to the image I had built in my mind, a violent criminal who had killed three young women. But standing before me, this man did not seem like the monster I expected.
My heart pounded in my chest as he disappeared through the hospital doors. I stood frozen for a moment, trying to process what I had just seen. I had come to this hospital expecting to deal with all kinds of patients, but nothing had prepared me for this. I had seen many patients over the past few months, but none had stirred the same strange mix of emotions in me as this man had. Fear, curiosity, and a strange pull of attraction filled me all at once.
Adaa was still beside me, watching the man enter the building with wide eyes. "Can you believe it? He’s here. I can’t wait to see what happens next"
I didn’t respond. My mind was too consumed by the man, the killer, whose beauty had left me shaken. The hospital had always felt like a strange place, but now it seemed darker, more dangerous, like it was hiding something I couldn’t yet understand.
As the door slammed behind him, I couldn’t shake the feeling that my life at St. Thomas had just become much more complicated.
