TEJASSWI POV
I couldn't see anything in the small supply room. The darkness was suffocating, and the heat made it even worse. I could feel the sweat trickling down my back, but the thought of leaving this spot was unbearable. I wanted to search for Sunny, but I had no idea where he might be. I was trapped here with no choice but to wait.It had been so long since I grabbed the gun from the unconscious guard and rushed into this room. I was now pressed into the farthest corner, hiding behind mops, brooms, and trash bags. Every little creak or shuffle in the distance made my heart race.
I didn't know where Sunny was but I had heard the guards dragging him away somewhere. What if something had happened to him? What if they had hurt him? My chest tightened with worry. I didn't know how he would find me again but I had to trust him. He had promised that we would escape together and I believed him. Sunny was the smartest, most determined person I had ever met. He wouldn't give up.
I jumped at every sound. My hands were clammy and the air felt heavy in my lungs. I could hardly breathe. This wasn't just fear, it was dread. If we got caught, there were no good outcomes. The thought of shock therapy or brain surgery sent chills down my spine. And worst of all, Aada and Sister Geeta would lose their jobs because of us. This wasn't just about me and Sunny anymore. It was about everyone else we had left behind.
I closed my eyes tightly praying for Sunny to burst through that door. I needed him. He had to come back. The seconds stretched into infinity and the room seemed to close in around me. I was about to lose hope when I heard the faint click of the doorknob turning.
I held my breath praying to God that it was him. Sunny. He was here. He had made it. My heart pounded in my chest. I was ready to call out to him. "Sunny" I almost shouted but then I stopped myself. Something didn't feel right.
The door creaked open and a figure stepped inside. It wasn't Sunny. I froze, my body pressed hard against the wall. I couldn't see him clearly in the dark but I could feel his presence. His figure was much larger than Sunny's. My stomach twisted with fear. I tightened my grip on the gun, my fingers trembling.
My breath caught in my throat. It was another person. Another patient, judging by his hurried breathing. Someone who had escaped, just like me. But he wasn't supposed to be here. He couldn't see me. Not yet.
I pulled back further into the shadows, doing my best to be as still as possible. My heart beat so loudly, I was sure he could hear it. The man's footsteps echoed in the silence as he moved closer. His breath was ragged, like he had been running for his life.
Please, just leave. Please don't notice me.
I kept my eyes fixed on him, barely able to see anything in the dark. He was so close now, I could feel his presence like an electric charge in the air. And then, without warning, I heard him move. It wasn't much-just the slightest shift of his body, but it was enough. He had turned his head, and suddenly I knew. He had sensed me.
A chill ran down my spine as he whispered, his voice low and rough "I can hear your breathing"
My blood ran cold. I froze. Every muscle in my body screamed for me to run, but my feet felt like they were glued to the floor. He knew I was here.
The seconds stretched out painfully as we stood there in the dark. I could hear him breathing heavily, like he was deciding what to do. My fingers tightened on the gun, and my mind raced. What if he tried to hurt me? What if he was dangerous? He didn't look like a guard but that didn't mean he wasn't dangerous.
I had no idea who he was or what he wanted but I knew one thing, I had to get out of this room.
"Who's there?" he asked. His voice quieter now as if he was trying to coax me into responding.
I didn't say anything. I couldn't. If I made a sound, I was sure he would come for me. Every breath I took felt like a risk. I needed to think fast, but my mind was racing too fast to focus.
Please, Sunny, where are you?
The man shifted again, his footsteps heavy on the ground. He was close now, much closer than I wanted him to be. I couldn't take it anymore. If he came any closer, I would be trapped.
I had to act but fear had completely consumed me. My entire body felt numb. My mind was racing, but my body didn't move. The terror was paralyzing. My heart pounded in my ears. I was too scared to run, too scared to fight back. I wasn't strong enough. The gun felt heavier in my hand.
"Who is it?" he asked again, his voice now laced with urgency. Then, a rough hand landed on my shoulder, and I winced at the touch.
I couldn't hold back anymore. I whispered the only thing I could think of "Tejasswi"
There was a pause, a long, unnerving silence. Then, his voice-deep and rumbling-came through the darkness. It was a laugh. A chuckle I knew all too well. A laugh I recognized in my bones.
"Hello, Teju"
