KARAN POV

Everything had gone smoothly in our plan up until this point. We were on track. We were ready. But this damn security guard had to ruin everything. Still, we weren’t going to give up. We had no choice. We were running for our lives.

Teju was struggling. I could tell. Her legs were weak—months of no food, no exercise. But still, we ran. Faster. But, somehow, the guard was even faster. When I felt his hand brush my shoulder, my stomach dropped. He grabbed me and yanked me around with a strength that knocked the breath out of me. In the chaos, I lost my grip on Teju’s wrist.

That’s when I saw the needle. I hadn’t even noticed it before. Cold fear rushed through me as I realized what he was about to do. But I was too slow. The sharp tip pierced my forearm before I could stop him. My heart pounded in my chest, but I couldn’t let panic take over. I had to stay calm. I knew what sedatives would do. And I knew the guard wanted to take me down first as I was the bigger threat. But his mistake was clear—he was still worried about Teju, letting his attention flicker to her.

Bad move.

The moment he looked away, I yanked the needle out of my arm and drove it into his neck with all the force I could muster. He gasped, reaching for his gun, but I didn’t give him a chance. I swung my fist into his face, knocking him to the ground. He didn’t get back up. But as I watched him fall, I could feel the drug starting to course through my veins.

"Sunny" Teju’s voice was shaky as she rushed toward me. "Are you okay?"

"I’m fine" I lied, though my vision was already starting to blur. "Teju you have to get out of here"

"No" she cried. "I’m not leaving you here Sunny. Not like this"

"There’s already some sedative in my blood" I said, my words slurring. "I’m going to pass out any second now. You have to go, Teju. You have to"

Her eyes brimmed with tears. "I’m not leaving you" she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. The pain in her eyes was unbearable. I knew she wasn’t going to leave me, no matter what I said.

"Fine" I sighed, knowing I had to think fast. My eyelids were growing heavier by the second. "Go to the supply room over there. Hide. You’ll be safe"

She hesitated, looking torn. The small storage room was just a few feet away, but I knew I wouldn’t make it there before the sedative took full effect. But she could. She had to.

"But you—" she started.

"Trust me" I said, grabbing her hand. "Go there and wait for me. I’ll find you. I promise. As soon as I wake up, I’ll come for you. Just stay hidden"

She shook her head, clearly struggling with the decision. I could see the battle in her eyes, but she knew she didn’t have a choice. She couldn’t drag me to safety. I couldn’t walk on my own. And we couldn’t ruin everything we’d worked for.

"Promise?" she asked, her voice trembling.

"I promise" I said softly. "Trust me Laddoo. I’ll find you"  A single tear slipped down her cheek, and I reached out to wipe it away. "Don’t cry baby. You’re strong. We’re going to break free. I swear it"

I barely finished the sentence before the darkness started creeping in. My body was giving up, sinking to the ground. Teju grabbed me, easing me down so I didn’t hit the floor too hard. My back slumped against the wall, and I could feel the sedative pulling me under.

"I love you" she whispered, her voice breaking as she cupped my face. Her lips pressed against mine, raw and full of passion. The kiss was fierce, like she was trying to pull me back to consciousness through sheer willpower. For a brief moment, it almost worked.

"I love you too" I whispered back, though my voice was barely a breath. She pulled away, and I knew she was leaving because her warmth was gone. I could only watch in a haze as she grabbed our bags and sprinted toward the supply room.

I heard footsteps echoing down the hallway behind me—another guard, coming closer. But it was too late. My body gave in, and the world went black.

I drifted in and out of darkness. Time seemed to warp. Minutes felt like hours. My limbs were heavy, and every breath took effort. But Teju’s face, her last words, kept me anchored to reality.

Slowly, painfully, I fought to wake up.

When I finally managed to open my eyes, I saw the guard I had taken down lying unconscious on the floor. The hallway was silent. For a moment, fear gripped me—had they found her? Had they taken her while I was out?

But then I remembered: the supply room.

I forced myself to my feet, staggering toward the small room where Teju was hiding. I had to get to her. I had promised. And I would keep that promise.

No matter what.
