Part 72

TEJASSWI POV
The darkness was thick around me, like a suffocating blanket, and I had no idea where I was headed. The weight of the gun in my hand felt heavier than ever, and I dreaded the thought of pulling the trigger again. My eyes strained to adjust as I searched for Sunny, hoping against hope that he was nearby. I wished I had dragged him into that room with me earlier. I could have waited for him to wake up. But the guard had gotten to him so quickly that I had no choice but to run and trust Sunny's instructions. He told me to stay hidden, but I had failed. Now I was all alone, and the fear was gnawing at me. My heart hammered in my chest, and the only thing I could do was search for him desperately.

Every corner I turned, I expected to find him. He had always protected me, always been there to shield me from the worst. But now, without him, I felt utterly exposed. Then, suddenly, I wasn't alone. I froze as I heard footsteps approaching in the distance. They were slow but steady, getting closer with every second. My pulse quickened and I ducked behind a corner praying that whoever it was wouldn't see me. My breath caught in my throat as I strained to listen.

There was something strange about the sound. It wasn't the fast, clipped pace of a guard. No, it was slower, more deliberate, like someone was dragging something heavy. The thought chilled me to the bone. Was it Sunny? Could someone be dragging his body? I tried to shake the thought from my head, but fear rooted me to the spot.

The sound grew louder, nearer. I pressed myself hard against the wall clutching the gun tighter in my trembling hand. The footsteps stopped suddenly, just around the corner, and my heart skipped a beat. Whoever it was, was now right beside me. I held my breath, every muscle in my body locked in place as the silence stretched on. No breathing, no movement, but I could feel a presence just inches away.

The tension was unbearable. I wanted to peek around the corner to see who or what was there but I didn't dare. I remained still, hoping that whatever it was would pass. Then, a voice shattered the silence.

"Tejasswi?" It was Sunny's voice, strained but unmistakable. He sounded close, but if he was calling me from down the hall, then who was standing right next to me?

My pulse raced. I couldn't take it anymore. I took the risk and whispered his name "Sunny?" My voice was shaky, but I didn't care. I needed him. I needed to be with him and feel safe again.

His voice called out again, closer this time "Laddoo?"

I bolted from my hiding spot, half running toward his voice and half fleeing from whatever was lurking in the shadows. My footsteps echoed down the corridor as I dashed toward Sunny.

Finally, I saw him. His figure appeared from the darkness, running toward me like a madman. His hair was disheveled, and his eyes wild with relief. I felt the crushing weight of fear lift from my chest as I ran to him, my steps quickening. When we finally reached each other, he grabbed me and pulled me into a dark room, our bodies colliding in a desperate embrace. His arms wrapped around me, strong and familiar and for the first time in what felt like forever, I could breathe again.

I pressed my face against his chest, inhaling his scent, and felt my nerves begin to settle. My hands found their way to his face and before I could stop myself, I kissed him, quick, hungry but filled with passion. When we broke apart, I clung to him. "I'm so glad I found you. I was so worried Sunny"

He tightened his arms around me, pulling me close. "So am I baby" he whispered.

"Are you okay?" I asked, looking up to check for any injuries. His face was clear, no blood, no marks. Relief flooded through me.

"I'm fine. What about you?" he asked, his eyes scanning my face.

"I'm okay" I said, though inside I was still trembling with fear and confusion.

"Good" he said softly, but his focus shifted quickly. "We need to get out of here. Do you have a gun?"

I nodded and handed him the weapon, my fingers brushing against his as I placed it in his larger hand.

"How did you know?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"I saw Vishal on the way here" he replied, his expression grim. He knew what I had done. I saw the flicker of pride in his eyes, though he didn't say anything. There was no time to discuss it now. We had to move.

"Stay close" he instructed. "Hold onto my hand or my uniform. Don't let go"

I did as he said, gripping his arm tightly as we started walking through the dark, shadowy halls. The risk of being caught by the guards was high but we had no other choice.

As we walked my mind kept returning to the figure I had felt earlier, the one who had stood silently beside me. "Sunny" I whispered, "there was someone near me before I found you"

He glanced back down the hallway, squinting into the darkness. "I don't see anyone. They must have left. Don't worry Laddoo. I've got you"

His reassurance calmed me, but my grip on his arm tightened as we moved closer to where I had been hiding earlier. Every step felt like a gamble, and my heart thudded loudly in my chest. But this time, there was no sound, no mysterious figure waiting in the shadows.

Sunny stopped in front of a door. I hadn't noticed it before, but now it loomed large and ominous. As I looked up, I could barely make out the letters above it: WARD-D.

The door to our next move, or perhaps our doom, awaited.
