Both of them were standing on the stage and getting their pictures clicked with the guests.
Anushka had a beautiful smile on her face. The glow of marriage. Everyone was congratulating them and some even teased them.
Mihir too was smiling and seeing her smile increased his happiness.
Maybe his life wouldn't be that bad with her. He had thought. The issue with her color was long forgotten. These two days that they were married he had seen how she had treated everyone with love and respect.
They were getting their pictures clicked when they heard a relative talking to his mother near the stage.
"Waise bhabhi bahu sawli dekhi aapne."
(You selected a dusky daughter-in-law.)
"Rang dekh kr nhi laaye didi. Dil ki bhut saaf hai hamari Anu."
(I did not see her color. Her heart is very pure.)
Her mother replied and the lady smiled sweetly.
"Nhi matlab itna sundar hai hamara Mihir aur bahu sawli. Koi baat waat ho gyi thi kya?"
(No I meant our Mihir is so handsome and daughter-in-law dusky. Did something happen?)
The lady asked his mother and Anushka's smile fell. For the first time in her life she felt conscious of her skin. Did she not look good beside Mihir?
She scooted a little away from him which didn't go unnoticed by Mihir.
He got off the stage and joined his hands in front of the lady and smiled very sweetly.
"Kaisi hai aap buaji?"
(How are you buaji?)
She nodded smiling and blessed him and he then turned to another woman beside her.
"Hi bhabhi! Aapse kuch puchhu toh aap bura toh nhi maangengi na?"
(Can I ask you something if you don't mind?)
He asked the woman who was the daughter-in-law of the lady. She shook her head with a smile and asked him to ask.
"Aap itni sundar aur fair and bhaiya thode sawle. Phir aapne unse shaadi ke liye haan kyu kri? Koi baat waat ho gyi thi kya?"
(You are so beautiful and fair and bhaiya is a little dark. Then why did you marry him? Did something happen?)
He asked the same way the lady had asked and she looked visibly embarassed.
The woman smiled and understood why he was asking this.
"Unka rang nhi dekha maine. Maine uss insaan se shaadi kri hai unke rang se nhi."
(I didn't see his color. I married the man not his color.)
He smiled and folded his hands in front of her smiling and then smiled very sweetly at the lady as if mocking her and went back to the stage.
He stood beside Anushka and held her waist pulling her close him. He then leaned in and whispered in her ear.
"Dobara kisi ki baat ko itna mat sochna. And don't move away from me."
(Don't think about anyone much.)
She looked at him and smiled while nodding happily. The way he stood up for her made her heart sore with happiness.
After the function was over everyone retired to their homes and they also went to theirs.
Anushka was going to change when Mihir held her wrist and softly pulled her closer. She looked shocked and looked at him wide eyed.
"Why did you not take stand for yourself? Uss din toh kitna achha jawab dia tha na. Then why didn't you take stand today?"
(That day you replied so well.)
She smiled softly and looked down playing with his coat button.
"Mai waha kuch bhi bolti toh baat mujhpr aati lekin yaha mai kuch bolti toh baat mere parents pr aati, unki upbringing pr aati."
(If I say something there it would come on me but if I say something here it would go on my parents, their upbringing.)
He got quiet and just listened to her.
"Log chahe jitna marzi feminism ki baat krle lekin sach yahi hai ki a woman is not considered as a part of family after marriage. Sirf uska husband hi hai jiki wo direct family ho skti hai."
(People might talk about feminism but reality is that a woman is not considered part of family after marriage. Its her husband whose direct family she is.)
He continued to observe her facial expressions as she spoke all this. Her lips were curled in a soft smile while the corner of her eyes filled with tears.
"Shaadi ke baad wife ki responsibility hoti hai apne husband ki reputation aur respect aur uski khudki respect ki responsibility uske husband ki ho jaati hai. Isliye unhe better half kehte hai."
(After marriage its the wife's responsibility of her husband's reputation and respect and about her own respect it becomes her husband's responsibility. That's why they are better halves.)
She then finally looked into his eyes and he noticed her glassy eyes.
"Thank you Mihir. Aaj jo aapne mere liye kiya uske liye."
(About what you did for me today.)
A tear fell from her eye which he wiped softly with his thumb and kissed her forehead making her smile.
The same night Anushka laid on the bed and saw Mihir already sleep. The past few weeks were very tiring for everyone.
She smiled pulled the sheets over her. It was around 15 minutes later that she felt him cuddle into her.
She looked at him. He was resting his face in the crook of her neck and his hands around her stomach and leg thrown over hers. Her husband was a clinger.
She smiled and kissed his forehead and slept while holding his hand that was around her stomach.
Mihir still had his holidays left so he decided to return to Mumbai early so that he can make Anushka familiar with everything there.
And so two days later they were all ready to board their flight back to Mumbai.
Anushka was getting ready for the airport when Mihir came and stood behind her. They looked at each other through the mirror and she smiled.
"So? Are you ready Mrs. Aggarwal? Apne naye ghar jaane ke liye?"
(To go to your new house?)
He asked in a light flirty tone and she smiled even wider and nodded.
The left for the airport. Their parents came to drop them and while Mihir was taking the luggage out Anushka hugged her parents.
It was like a second bidaai for her.
"Dhyan rakhio apna."
(Take care.)
Her mother said and her father kissed her head.
"Aap dono bhi."
(You too.)
She said and hugged them one last time. She then took blessing from her in laws and Mihir too took blessing from her parents and bid a bye to his.
Mihir noticed her mood as they sat on their seats and removed the hand rest. She looked at him and he motioned her to come to him.
She went into his arms willingly and kept her head on his shoulder while he caressed her back and kissed her head.
The next 3-4 days he gave her a complete tour of Mumbai and even showed her where he worked.
Her job criteria was still left to be fulfilled so she was still home for another two weeks.
