Derek

Nathan came downstairs a few minutes ago. He seems a little tipsy but he's not as drunk as he was when he came here.

he spoke to the children for a few minutes but I don't think they noticed that he was drunk, not that they'd even know what that is or what it looks like.

the twins don't seem to be bothered by it but Meredith does. every time I look in her direction she's staring at him with a worried look on her face.

the other kids don't seem to mind it either and thankfully the parents aren't here either so they can't complain.

I look over at Nathan and see him pouring himself a glass of alcohol.

"I'm thirsty," Mallory tells me.

"What do you want to drink?" I ask her.

"ice water," she says.

"that's very specific. stay here," I tell her. I place her on the couch and go into the kitchen.

"That's a bit much don't you think?" I say as I grab a sippy cut from the cabinet.

"so is you trying to steal my fiancee, stealing my kids, and trying to kill yourself all at the same time, don't you think?" he says.

"Well I was planning to steal Meredith first which should be easy since you made her hate you and the twins already love me and then I can wait a few years before I decide to end it," I say. I put some ice and water in the cup and screw the lid back on.

"Are you serious Man?" he asks looking at me.

"Yes, you suck and so do I but I'm better at hiding it than you are,"

"Meredith isn't stupid," he says.

"I didn't say she was, you did," I say.

"I didn't say Meredith as stupid, that's not what I meant," he says. "sounds like it's what you meant, nobody said she was stupid until you did," I say. "Meredith's a very smart person, she went to an Ivy league school," he says.

"I didn't say she was dumb, that was you," I say. "That's not what I meant!" he raises his voice. "Calm down, it's not like she heard it," I shrug. "No but you did and your dumbass is going to tell her," he says. "what are you scared of me?" I say.

"You want me to beat the shit out of you, suicidal?" he asks. "yeah, a little bit.. but wait until I give my daughter her water first," I say before leaving the kitchen.

Meredith

I finish up with Miles. I help him with his pants and button up his jeans.

"Alright, now go wash your hands," I tell him. He steps on the step stool and washes his hands.

I hand him a towel. He dries his hands and steps off. I take him back into the living room.

"Mommy, daddy's awe fighting," Mallory comes up to me. "What?" I ask. She points into the kitchen.

I see Nathan take a swing at Derek. "Oh for Gods sake," I say.

I walk into the kitchen. "Derek, don't.. you're going to scare the kids," I say pulling him away from Nathan.

"He threw the first punch," he says as Nathan takes another swing at Derek.

"Oh!" I yelp as his fist hits me on the cheek.

"Mommy!" I hear the twins yell. "Meredith, are you-" Nathan says trying to get closer to me before Derek pushes him away.

"Meredith, are you okay?" Derek says as he places his hands on my shoulders.

"Yeah I- um I'm fine, just- just give me a sec," I say moving out of his arms and go to my room.

Derek

"Nice one asshole," I say. "Are you sober enough to tell the kids you meant to hit me instead of Meredith?" I say.

I walk over to then twins and crouched down to their level. "Daddy you bleeding," Mallory says touching the cut on my cheek.

"It was an accident okay? Your dad didn't mean to hit me or your mommy, he meant to hit the wall okay?" I say. They hesitantly nod.

"I'm going to go check on your mommy and make sure she's okay, can you to take care of yourself's for a few minutes?" I ask. They nod.

"Okay, thank you," I say. I kiss both their heads and go check on Meredith.

When I get to her bedroom door I gently knock on the door before opening it.

I see that she's not in the bedroom area. I see the bathroom light on that's connected to the bedroom.

"Are you okay?" I ask her. She's standing by the sink holding a wet cloth to her cheek.

"Yeah I'm fine. The cold waters helping," she says with tears in her eyes.

"The kids think it was an accident... how bad is it?" I say standing next to her.

"It's not too bad," she says. "He was aiming for me, it had to have been a hard hit," i say.

I carefully remove the cloth from her cheek. I see a large bruise starting to form around the cut on her cheek.

"That'll leave a scar," I say. "I need to cover it up so the kids don't go home talking about it. Who's watching the kids?"

"Nathan, he may be an asshole but he can babysit for a twenty minutes, he was a father for two years im sure he can manage," I say.

"Can I stay with him? I mean people say it's best to leave as soon as possible when a man hits you and I have kids so it's not just about me," she says.

"Meredith, he wasn't trying to hit you, he was trying to hit me, not you," I tell her.

"Still, he's changed, I've never seen him like this. He's not a big drinker and now he's coming home drunk to the twins birthday and now he's fighting and punches me while trying to punch you and-"

"Meredith, calm down.. Right now all you need to worry about is getting through this birthday and covering up that bruise, but don't get any makeup in the cut," I say.

"Okay, can you please go check on the kids? I don't really trust him right now," I say.

"Yes, of course," I say. I kiss her on the lips for a few seconds before I leave the bathroom and go into the living room.

I just kissed Meredith...
