Meredith.

Derek's been working a lot lately and he couldn't make it to Hope's first-month appointment. Arizona says she's perfectly healthy.

She's a little small for her age and she is the size of a two-week-old rather than a four-week-old even though she's eating fine and everything else about her is normal.

After the appointment I get Hope buckled into her car seat and leave the office.

On my way to daycare, I get stopped by Derek.

"Hey, how's the appointment go, is everything okay?" He says smiling down at Hope.

"You would know had you been there," I say. "Meredith I told you I had surgery," he says.

"So did I but I cancelled because once again if I don't take care of the kids you damn well won't," I say.

"Why are you so upset? I missed one appointment," he says.

"No, you missed hundreds of appointments, you were never there for Mallory, you were never there for Miles and now you're bailing out on Hope. You said you were going to be there this time, you said with Hope it would be different, you would be different. But it's not different, you're the same person you've always been, and you still can't commit to being a father. It's not that damn hard Derek, all you have to do is show up, I have been doing it for almost three years alone and you can't even do it for a month? Even Nathan was able to see past the fact that they weren't his and he was always there for them, but of course, you still can't get your crap together!" I yell before pushing past him and taking the elevator to daycare.

I arrive on the fourth floor and walk into the daycare center. "Mommy!" Miles and Mallory yell when they see me.

"Hello my babies," I crouch down and hug them both, placing Hope's carrier down on the floor. "Are you two having fun," I say pulling away and standing up.

"Yeah, where's Daddy?" Miles asks. "He's in surgery right now but he'll come to visit you two once he's finished okay?" I smile. he nods.

the twins run away and play while I take Hope and hand her to one of the nurses.

I hang out with the kids for maybe forty-five minutes before I leave the daycare center and take an elevator down to the first floor.

I check the board for my next surgery. I see that my next surgery is in two hours so I decide to take the time to get changed into my scrubs.

as I'm walking to the resident's lounge I get pulled into an on-call room.

"What the-" I say before I see Derek. "What do you want, you want me to kick your ass again? I have surgery but at least I took care of my kids first," I say.

"Meredith, I'm sorry for not being at Hope's first-month appointment... I miss looked how important they are and I'm really really sorry, I promise to be at the next one,' He says.

"Derek, I don't care what you say, I care about if you're actually going to do it or not, I mean do you really want to be at Mallory's wedding and when I start telling stories about her childhood you're never part of them?"

"No, of course not," he says. "then just... all I ask is to be a damn Dad, why is that so much to ask for? I've raised two kids without you and I never left, it was hard but I still did it, it's not that hard," I say putting my hand over my mouth and turning around so he can't see me cry.

"Meredith... I promise I'm going to be there for the kids, those two years are the only years I plan to not be with the kids," I say putting his hands on my shoulder.

"just be there for the kids, that's all I ask," I turn around and wrap my arms around his neck and his arms go around my waist.

"I will be, I promise. You don't have to worry about that anymore, I promise you," he says.

"I have surgery soon so I have to go," I say pulling away.

"Okay," he says as he wipes away the tears under my eyes with his thumbs.

"I told the twins you were in surgery and you would come and visit them when you were finished," I say.

"Okay, I'll go check in them," he says. "Okay," I say. I let go of him and walk out of the on-call room.

After surgery, I go up to the daycare centre and go to pick up the kids. But when I get there I don't see the kids anywhere, all three of them are gone.

I leave the daycare centre and go to the resident's lounge.

I get changed into my regular clothes and leave the hospital. When I get back home I see Derek's car parked in the driveway.

I get out of the car and go inside. "Where are the kids?" I ask Derek as I lock the door behind me.

"I just put the twins down and Hope has been asleep for the past half hour so the house is pretty quiet so I got to take a shower," Derek says.

"That's good," I say. "Did Hope go down easy? She slept all day and I was worried she wouldn't be able to fall asleep tonight," I say walking into the living room and sitting next to him.

"I thought so too but she's at that stage where she's always sleeping so she went down right after I gave her a bottle," he says.

"Okay, I'm going to go shower," I say. I kiss his lips before leaving and taking a shower. We can't have sex yet so he went down on me twice before we went to sleep.
