This takes place at the beginning of season 2. After Meredith found out about Derek wife and is trying to move on from him. But something comes up might change her life forever.
Today is the twins birthday. I invited some of the kids friends from daycare and I set up everything.
I decorated the house and blew up some balloons. I taped some to the walls and left the rest around the room.
There's a large table with snacks and juice boxes for the kids.
I let the twins pick out two different cakes so they could each have what they wanted.
Mallory chose a white and purple cake with her name on it reading 'happy birthday Mallory'
Miles got a white and dark blue cake with his name on it reading 'happy birthday Miles'
Nathan isn't here right now, I'm not sure where he is. I'm pretty sure he went out to the bar.
I was planning on Nathan taking the kids out until I had everything set up but he said he couldn't so I asked Derek if he would and he said yes.
so the kids are at the park with Derek while I'm getting everything read for them.
I'm not one hundred percent what a children's birthday party is supposed to like this but If I had to this as a child I would be happy.
Once everything is set up I go into the kitchen and grab my phone and dial Nathan's phone number.
the phone rings for a few seconds but he never answers. I try again but he doesn't answer that time either.
I end the call and try calling Derek.
"everything's ready and one of the parents told me they're going to be here soon, can you bring the kids home?"
"Yeah, the kids are getting bored, we'll be back soon," he says.
"Okay, see you then. bye," I say.
"Bye," he says and I hang up the phone.

I hear Derek and the kids in the hallway. the key unlocks and the kids and Derek walk in.
"Wow, Mer.. this looks great," Derek says as he walks over to me.
"it's not too little or too much?" I ask.
"No, No, it's perfect," he says putting his hand on my back.
"Do you think the twins will like it?"
"You tell me," he points to the twins playing with the balloons. I smile.
"Where's Nathan?" he asks.
"I don't know. I tried calling him earlier but he didn't answer, I tried a few times but he never answered and then I called you.. and you answered," I say.
"I'm sure he will be here soon, maybe his phone died," he says.
"Yeah, maybe," I nod.

it's a while later and all the kids are here. Nathan hasn't showed up yet but Derek is still here. the twins seem to be having fun so far, they're very energetic today I think Derek got them ice cream before they got here.
I hear the doorknob jiggle. I look and see Nathan walk in, he's drunk.
Derek looks at Nathan for a few seconds before he takes his attention back to the kids. I stop what I'm doing and I walk over to Nathan at the front door.
"what are you doing here?" I ask him quietly so the kids don't hear.
"It's my kids birthday, you think I'd miss it?" he says as he stumbles a bit.
"Why are you drunk? it's two in the afternoon," I say.
"I just had a few, where are the twins?" he says as he stumbles again. I place my hand on his shoulders to hold him up.
"You're not seeing the twins like this, go upstairs, take a shower, change your clothes, sober up and then you can see them," I tell him.
"No, Meredith-"
"Go take a shower," I tell him. he rolls his eyes and goes down the hall.
"So I see Nathan finally showed up?" Derek says as I walk over to him and Mallory.
"Yes, with three bottles of alcohol in him," I say. I grab a napkin and wipe Mallory's face.
"That's where he was? The bar?" He asks.
"Yes, I guess so," I say. He nods.
