Derek.
Meredith has a big surgery today which means I have all three of the kids for the rest of the day since it's my day off.
Meredith's surgery should last around thirty-two hours so I'll have them longer than just for the day.
The only problem I should really have to face today is when Hope wants Meredith, at least twice a day Hope will start crying and there's nothing I can do about it.
if she wants Meredith then the only person who can stop her crying is Meredith and if Meredith isn't there then she cries for hours until she falls asleep.
I picked Mallory and Miles up from ballet and soccer. I took them home, bathed them and got them into some nice clean clothes before taking them to eat at a restaurant.
"Why are we eating here today Daddy?" Mallory asks. "Don't you like it?" I say. "Yeah, it's pretty," she says.
"Your birthdays are coming up soon, do you know what you want to do for them?" I ask. "Do we have to share the same birthday? I don't want Miles's stinky friends at my party," she says.
"You can have your own parties if you want, we can get you your own cakes, and you'll get your own presents. You may be twins but you two are very different kids," I say.
"Yeah, we don't look the same. everybody says we do but Miles looks like you, I look like Mommy," she says.
"What about you Miles, what do you want to do for your birthday?" I ask. "I want my own party too, I want a chocolate cake," he says.
"That we can do. what do you want for your birthday?" I ask. "a lot of things," they both say. "Well, then you two can make a list when we get home and Mommy and I will do our best," I say.
"what are you going to do for Hope's birthday, she's little?" Mallory says. "What did you do for our first birthday?" Miles asks.
"Well... we had a small birthday since you didn't have any friends yet, you got a cake and some presents, you were just too young to really remember any of it," I say. they both nod.
"Are we going to do it at home?" Mallory asks. "Well if it's nice I was thinking Miles' party could be outside and yours could be in the house, what do you think?" I say.
"Yeah," Miles nods. "Are your sisters coming?" Mallory asks. "Do you want my sisters there?" I say. "Yes, but tell Aunt Nancy to be nice to Mommy," she says.
"I'll do that," I say. "Why does Aunt Nancy not like Mommy?" Miles says. "I don't know, I don't think Aunt Nancy really likes anyone, not even herself," I say.
"that's sad," he says. "Yes, it is. but that's just how she is. neither of you are allowed to become like her, you hear me?" I say.
"Yes, Daddy," they both say.
"Good, if you want to become like anyone, become like your mother. she's one of the good ones," I say.
"That's because her Mommy was mean," Mallory says.
I look up at her confused, Meredith doesn't tell the kids anything but good things about Ellis.
"Who told you that?" I ask. "The hospital people said her Mommy was mean, I told Mommy but she said they were lying, she says.
"You guys know you can't believe everything the people at work say, right? They'll say anything so they don't have to do their job," I say. "Yeah," they both say.
**********
After we finish eating I pay. I grab Hope's carrier and take the kids back to the car. "What is Hope going to eat?" Mallory says as I get into the driver's seat.
"Your mother left some milk in the fridge, she'll be hungry when she wakes up, she'll get that," I say. "That's boring for her," Miles says.
"You two used to only get milk until you were old enough to eat baby food," I say. "That's sad," Mallory says.
"When Mommy coming home?" Miles says. "She's not going to be home for a while. she has a long surgery, she'll be in there for the next thirty hours," I say as I pull out of the parking lot.
"Forever?!" He says. "No, she'll come home tomorrow," I say. "I miss her," he says. "If you don't think about it then she'll be home sooner, don't worry," I say as I drive home.
"Thirty is a big number," he says. "It won't be when you're thirty," I say. "You're thirty?" he asks. "No, I'm fort three," I say. Mallory and Miles both gasp.
"You're gonna be fifty, wow," Miles says. "Daddy's gonna die soon," Mallory whispers to him. "I'm not going to die soon. one day yes but not anytime soon. just because I'm old doesn't mean I'm going to die soon," I say.
"You don't know that," Mallory says. I sigh and continue to drive home.
