This takes place at the beginning of season 2. After Meredith found out about Derek wife and is trying to move on from him. But something comes up might change her life forever.
"Why are you so scared of the plane, plane crashes aren't that common," I tell her. we're no longer taking a regular plane, we're taking the plane provided by the hospital, they needed an organ dropped off in Rome,"
"Yes, I know, if it was just you and me then I wouldn't be so worried but we have the kids with and Hope, she's a baby. she's the first to get eaten if we land in the middle of nowhere," she says.
"Excuse me?" I say. "She's small Derek, a wolf can swallow her in a couple of seconds, it wouldn't even need to chew. look how small she is!" she says pointing to Hope sleeping in her carrier on the other side of the plane.
"Yes, Meredith, I know she's small but she's not going to get eaten by a wolf because we're not going to crash," I say. "Do you think we should have drove instead of flying?" she says.
"No Mer I don't, Rome is very far away and that's a long way to drive to with three kids. Look at the kids, they're fine, they're not scared," I say looking over at Mallory and Miles playing on their Ipads with their headphones on watching a move.
"Of course, they're not scared. their brains aren't wired that way yet but if they inherit anything from me they are going to inherit my fear of planes. it's my mother's fault," she groans.
"Wow, you found another problem of yours to blame on your mother," I say. "I can blame everything on my mother, she's dead, what is she going to do?" she says.
"Do you want Mallory to do that, she's a lot like you," I say. "She might but I'm a great mother, I actually feed my kids food that doesn't come prepared, my kids won't be malnourished," she says.
"So There's an Ellis Grey, Meredith Grey, and now a Mallory Grey," I say. "her last name is Grey-Shepherd," she says. "But Mallory is a Grey, she has my hair, my curls, and my last name but she is a Grey, she's a Grey all the way," I say.
"Yeah, that's true. she does remind me a lot of myself when I was her age," she says looking at Mallory. "She looks exactly like you, and her hair is starting to get a bit lighter so she'll be blonde in a couple of years," I say.
"Yeah, it's nice raising a little me. I can give her the childhood I always wanted, it's like closure, I can live vicariously through her but not in the narcist way, I'm not Joan Crawford," she says.
"I will never understand how they have her three more kids after the first one," I say. "She was a great actress, that's how," she says."
"Well you're a good mother, the kids love you and it's good that you're giving them to childhood you never had. You won't make them do things they don't want to, you make sure they like ballet and soccer. you make sure they're happy," I kiss her cheek.
"I know, I'm going to close my eyes for a bit so I can pretend I'm somewhere other than on a plane. let me know if the twins need anything or if Hope is hungry," she kisses my lips before turning to the side and closing her eyes.
I look over to the kids to make sure Hope is still asleep and the twins are still occupied with their movie.
maybe an hour passes and Meredith smarts to wake up. She lifts her head off my shoulder and sits up.
She quickly shut the window next to her before leaning against me.
"How was your nap," I say with my arm still wrapped around her.
"It was good, how are the kids?" She asks. "The kids are still fine. Their movie finished so I put on another one and they ate some of their snacks. Hope woke up once I fed her with some of the milk that was in the bag so I didn't have to wake you and she went back to sleep. I think she's already jet-lagged," I chuckle.
"I want to say we have great kids but I don't want to jinx it," she smiles. "Yeah, they are pretty great... I can't believe I almost missed out on all of it. If you think about it's only been a year since I came back into their lives. We might not have Hope if I didn't," I say.
"I can't imagine not having Hope," she says. "Me neither," I blink away the tears and kiss her head.
"We don't have to tell the kids when they're older, they don't need to know they for two years Nathan raised them and now you. They don't need to know," she says.
"Okay," I nod kissing her lips. "How many more hours!" She asks. "Nine," I answer.
"Great," she groans before closing her eyes and laying her head on my shoulder.
