They weren't going to confess it being love outside of their own heads.
They already knew it wasn't going to last forever.
No matter how they felt in the moment, they knew it'd end.
Red x wasn't going to stay forever, he was here for a small amount of time before he'd move on to the next city and carry on with his jobs.
Robin would stay with the titans, they needed him, he needed them, he was a hero, he couldn't just leave to go with Red.
They both saw the world differently, held different dreams and knew they'd never be able to date forever as they were.
The titans didn't know.
Mentors didn't know.
They liked it that way.
It made the fights as real as they were needed to be.
Proved that no matter how attached they became to the other, they could still do what was needed to be done in the moment.
They needed to be able to hurt the other, to capture them if needed, they couldn't allow feelings to meddle with their lines of work.
It might not have been a healthy relationship but it was pure.
They knew how they felt, it wasn't a first love, both experienced that. It was just some teen love that taught them how to love better.
Clothes, gear and masks were never taken off, even when it stood as only them in a room.
No names given, only hero identities were known.
It was one of the many rules agreed between them.
They knew it wasn't going to last so why risk their future by being left exposed and raw.
Cute kisses shared through masks, gloved hands holding and cuddled up in a chosen safe house as they judged characters in the films they watched.
It might not have been perfect but it was them, it left them feeling happy still.
They did care for the other, deeply.
But they met as hero and criminal, not as two strangers on the street.
Maybe, some day in the future, they might bump into each other and gain a second chance.
Maybe being grown up and an adult, they'd be able to find some middle grounds to live with.
