Richard Grayson was a forbidden subjected in the Wayne manor. 

Bruce did end up making Richard his ward when the boy was eight, just turning nine not long after taking him in. 

But Bruce had kept the bat's secret far from Dick's ears and reach. 

Richard was never to be told over Batman, the cave and the craving for Justice that the dark knight held. 

Richard was raised as his ward, as an underage roommate and kept at a safe distance from the night life that the other's in the manor knew over. 

Jason hated such rules. 

He'd arrive when Dick was seventeen, freshly left to live in the police academy dorms. Dick would visit on Sunday, come home for Sunday lunch before heading back to the dorms.

Jason hated it. 

He didn't hate Dick, he admired him and felt a bit jealous at times but he couldn't find it in himself to hate the older boy. 

Jason felt guilty.

He knew over Batman, he was kept close to the real Bruce Wayne and wasn't pushed to be an outcast in his own home like Dick was. 

Jason witnessed first hand at how closed off Bruce was around him, purposely making sure that nothing related to Batman or the night life was let slip. 

Bruce was happy lying to Dick's face, direct eye contact while doing so. 

Jason wasn't happy to do the same. 

He felt guilty, awful and couldn't always forgive himself for keeping away from Richard during the few hours he came to the manor to eat and catch up with them over anything that happened during the week. 

It only grew worse when it was clear that Bruce didn't agree with Dick's choice in choosing the police force for his future job. Often lecturing or arguing with Dick over the job choice. Even when Dick's confessed to wanting to gain justice for his parents, to wanting to protect Gotham and her people. To make sure no other child is left afraid of their parents, of losing their parents or anyone to be beaten down by the beloved but cold city. 

Dick wanted to help as Batman helps, but he'd be doing so by following the laws of the country. 

And Bruce was disappointed and against him in doing so. 

It's why Robin took to the skies in Gotham. 

Jason had asked

The manor wasn't a home to Dick. 

The people inside Wayne manor weren't a family to him either. 

Jason didn't realize those two facts until after he died and finally lived through those old memories from the outside. 

He finally understood why Alfred had always tried so hard in getting Bruce to confess to Dick the Wayne secrets so often. Why Alfred had always warned Batman that one day in the future would be too late for Dick.
