Nowadays...
Okay, maybe I have a bit of an emotional block. And maybe the only person who used to hug me and have physical contact with me all the time in recent years was my mom. That said, I don't know how to deal with certain displays of affection. For example, I don't know why Will and Emory are standing outside the school bathroom, waiting for me to come out in the uniform they bought for me.
I mean, I don't even know why they came to drop me off at school in the first place. I could have called a car, but they wouldn't let me. They said it wouldn't make sense, and that I could get a ride with them since they also dropped Indie and Finn off every day.
I let out a loud sigh as I fixed my tie. I already knew how to drive. I had gotten my license in France and although I hardly used it, I had a Volvo V40 in my favorite color. However, upon returning here, I discovered that I would have to go through practically everything one more time before I could drive again.
I couldn't wait to have tests to prove that my hearing and vision weren't affect by my disorder.
I opened the bathroom door and walked out, having two pairs of eyes watching me.
"I didn't realize that this skirt was shorter than the one I wore at boarding school," I comment, looking down at my knees.
I lift my face when I hear Will grunting in pain and Emory trying not to laugh, but giving him a warning look.
"Are you wearing contacts?" - he asks in disguise, cocking his head to one side.
I nod once.
"Are you feeling all right?" - Emory asks, turning to me.
This is the third time she has asked me that question this morning.
"Yes," I answer for the third time. – "I'll go get my backpack."
I warn them and go into the bathroom again, closing the door.
"Will..." - I hear her voice.
"What? You say you don't see the resemblance?" - he asks. – "Put a pink dress on her and we're looking at the younger version of you, I mean, you're almost identical, Emmy! Which makes me curious to know if she has that little spot..."
"You're not going to ask her that."
"Why not?"
"Because you can't just ask an underage girl if she has a spot on an intimate part without making her run and scream 'STRANGER DANGER' down the street!"
"All right..." - he answers and after a few seconds he speaks again. – "But just out of curiosity, do you still have your uniform? I mean, I think you could wear it and we could...
And then I don't hear his voice anymore and decide to move away from the door, holding back my laughter. I go into the cabin again, picking up my backpack and taking one last look in the mirror.
It was impossible not to feel nostalgic when I saw myself again in that uniform, but I also felt divided for having so many good and bad memories from this time.
"I will be in Meridian most of the day, but if you need anything, you can call Will. He will be in Coldfire and can come help."
I confirm silently. As if I'm really going to do that.
"You can also ask any of the children for help," Will adds. – "And I have asked Ivar to keep an eye on you."
"Why?" - I ask, grimacing.
Will shrugs.
"It is his first week back at school, he could be useful."
I snort in disbelief and start walking down the hall.
