Nowadays...

In the early evening, Dr. Jeff Novak came to my room to explain what had happened and reassured me, at the same time that the nurse who accompanied him, removed the serum and the band that was under my eyes and changed it for adhesive eye patches, which should be changed every three hours, as two eye drops would be applied according to these changes. A complicated process, but according to him, if I followed his prescriptions to the letter, I could take the patches out tomorrow and be discharged, although I would have to avoid excessive light for the next three days.

"As for your contact lenses, Ms. Scott, I would advise you to return to them in at least three months. Your eyes need to be fully healed before you can consider the option again."

I let out the breath I was holding before saying:

"That's fine, I can keep wearing glasses until then."

After that, the nurse explained to Emory about the eye drops and the frequency and I kept listening as I didn't want to be a bother. I mean, she already has three kids and she's here spending another night with just me, isn't she?

"Since we have a long night coming up, what will you have for dinner?" - she asks me, after we are alone and while I think for a moment, she starts to consider: - "You always eat whatever you have prepared at home and I've never seen you have a say in what you want to eat.... I know that Will and I can be a bit eccentric and we like to vary a lot in the kitchen, but what do you like?"

"I think pizza is a good one and as for what I like, you don't have to worry: I like to experiment and I have no problem adapting," I explain, shrugging.

She doesn't say anything else for a long time, but I get the impression she's watching me.

"Okay, I'm going to stop by Sticks for a pizza and then get some things to get us through the night. If you need anything," - she holds my hand for a moment and lifts my arm to the wall, making me touch something that looks like a button above the gurney – "you can press this button that the nurse assured me would be available at any time. I'll do my best to come back soon."

"All right," I say, sliding my hand over the spot, trying to recognize the object.

She pauses a moment longer and looks hesitant, so I decide to reassure her.

"You can go, Emory," I say, holding back a smile. – "I promise I'll try not to die until you get back."

I hear her laugh low and she touches my shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze.

"I'll be right back," she says and I hear her footsteps moving away.

After I hear the door close, I try to focus on the noise outside. I don't know what time it is, I have no idea where my belongings are or if someone has already brought them, and maybe that's what Emory meant when he talked about buying some things. I hear a voice coming from some speaker and it is the only constancy I have at the moment. I wanted to know what the room I'm in looks like out of curiosity, because when the nurse fixed the plugs in my eyes all I could see for a few seconds was the color of her blonde hair and her brown eyes. I didn't even get to see if there is a window in the room and as soon as I realize that, I put my feet off the gurney and walk out trying to grope along the wall to where there might be a window or the door. Maybe if I left the door open, I could feel calmer for hearing the movement outside.

The door opens suddenly, hitting my forearm that has just found the handle and I am startled when someone enters the room, pushing me inside.

"Who's there?" - I ask, stepping back quickly and releasing myself from whoever's grasp.
