Nowadays...

She was driving me crazy.

And not in the way I appreciated. Ever since Uncle Aydin's birthday, when we went on a long round trip to New York and she insisted that we take Finn with us, I noticed that she was choosing not to be alone with me.

Since then, everything we've done has been accompanied by an adult or one of the children, including my father's birthday, which I managed to convince her to attend, and the preparation for the homecoming dance we were asked to help organize. She even helped Jett convince Uncle Kai to let her go. Of course, he made it clear that she would only go if Mads went too and once again, it was up to Nini to convince Mads that he would have a good time if he went... As if Mads was ever going to say no to Nini or Tavi.

Even so, Nini was giving me no clue what was going on and it was driving me crazy. Of course, no matter how many times I asked, she always denied it and tried to cover it up.

The problem was that I was sure she had forgiven me and that the change in her schedule was no longer the reason she was distant, since we were always together, except at school, but I was counting on filling that gap today, at the homecoming dance. Even though she hadn't even confirmed to me whether she was going or not.

There was also no comment about what I would wear, nothing about what we could do after the ball and even less about whether she would go to the ball with me.

"Now, taking advantage of the fact that there are only a few hours left, can you tell me what color tie I should wear?" I ask, standing in front of her as she works at her desk, wearing the uniform I've been dreaming of taking off her body anywhere in this school for the last few weeks.

She's drawing and hand-cutting the outline of all the lanterns that will be used at the dance, but without telling me, she just rolls her eyes. Her silence is completely optional.

"We're running out of time to work out what we're going to wear," I tease her, helping her turn the lantern at the same time as she works with a pair of scissors and a pencil.

"And what a crime that would be," she mutters with a sigh.

"I've been trying to act natural, but I'm starting to worry," I say, frowning. – "After all, you haven't even confirmed that you're really going to the dance with me. And the days are going by... I'm starting to believe that maybe you've already agreed to go to the dance with someone else and you just didn't tell me to spare my fragile heart. "

She pauses, holding the scissors halfway and meets my eyes.

"I'm beginning to believe that I might have to call your father and tell him that a terrible accident happened and you tripped over a pair of scissors that stabbed your fragile heart a dozen times."

I let out a loud laugh that echoes around the room and makes other people stop what they're doing, but soon everyone goes back to their business.

"I think that's the longest sentence you've said to me in the last two weeks," I say as I release the lantern and sit down in the chair next to her.

"No, it wasn't. I helped you with your statistics homework on Tuesday," she recalls, lowering her eyes again.

"It's the longest non-study sentence" I correct her and it's my turn to roll my eyes, but I take a deep breath and move closer, placing my hand at the base of her spine and caressing it with my thumb. – "You know I'm going to be at your door at eight and ready to take you away even if I have to wear a tie with all the colors of the rainbow, don't you?"

Her back arches, but she doesn't move away and after a few seconds, a short smile breaks out on her lips and I know she's having fun as she imagines me wearing the damn tie.
