The Mail Woman

I had been worried about Winter all morning cuz she wasn't answering calls or texts. But after I got off the phone with her, I was more worried. She wasn't talking like herself. It was very low and dull. I hate that there was nothing I could do. My mind was on her all day.

I finally pulled into her neighborhood. I started putting mail into the mailboxes and having people sign for their packages. I haven't seen Lay and Aday in a while. Their mom said that they were after-school activities so they were home late. I got them a snack bag that I was going to drop off. I pulled up, grabbed the mail, and headed up the sidewalk. Before I could get to the stairs, the door opened and they both ran to me.

"Heyyyy..." I said hugging them both

"Kass..." Aday said hugging me tighter

"How y'all been??" I asked smiling and looking at them

"We started soccer..." Lay said smiling

"Y'all like it??" I asked

"Yes, we run so fast to kick the ball..." Aday said jumping

"I'm glad. Let me know, I'll try to make it to one of your games..." I said

"Yayyyy!!" They yelled happily

"I brought y'all a gift..." I said holding up the snack bags

They smiled as I gave each of them one.

"What do you say??" We heard making them look back and me lookup

"Thank you..." they said hugging me again

I waved at their mom and hugged them back.

"Here's the mail..." I said holding it up for their mom cuz they had ran into the house

"Thank you..." she said grabbing it

I waved before getting back in the truck. I continued putting mail in the mailboxes then I made it to Winter's house. I pulled up and saw her car in the driveway. I was very confused cuz she said she had work late but she's home. I put the mail in the mailbox and pulled off. I grabbed my phone and FaceTimed her. After a few rings, she answered.

"Hello..." she said in a raspy tone before clearing her throat

"Hey, what you doing??" I asked

"Nothing, cleaning and sorting out files to kill time..." she said

"I saw your car at your house, I thought you were there..." I said

"Nah, I gave him the car..." she said

"What!?" I asked
"why??"

"Because it's in his name, he thinks he can use it
over my head to have power ova me. He wanted to know where I was headed, I didn't tell him, and then he threatened to take the car. So, I just gave him his keys..." she said

I shook my head.

"Have you eaten anything??" I asked

"No..." she said softly

"And why not??" I asked

"Really haven't been in the mood to eat..." she said

"I'm bout to send you some food. Is there anything in particular you want??" I asked

"You don't have to..." she said

"But I'm going to..." I said
"What you want??"

"Something simple, please. I don't think my stomach can handle anything else..." she said
