You woke up Friday morning with a horrible headache, stuffy nose, and sore throat. You groaned and pulled your blanket over your head. You definitely weren't making it into work today. You placed a call to the principal at your school and let him know you would need a substitute, grabbed some cold medicine, made a cup of tea, and then crawled back into bed.
You tossed and turned in your bed until you were comfortable. You debated texting your boyfriend, Bucky, letting him know that you wouldn't be into work, but your head was killing you and you didn't want to even look at your phone screen. Principal Rogers was his best friend. He would tell him at some point.
You were almost asleep when you were jolted awake. Your phone rang on your nightstand, but you ignored it. As soon as it stopped ringing, you turned it to silent without bothering to see who called. You wanted to be miserable in peace and that's what you did the rest of the day.

Bucky walked into his classroom early Friday morning to set up the activities he had planned for his class. He had just tried calling you for the third time, but you still didn't answer your phone. He finished setting up with only a few minutes to spare until his first class. He sighed, wishing he had more time so he could walk down to your classroom and say good morning, but he would see you during your lunch hour, so he greeted his students as they trickled into his room.
He sat down in the teacher's lounge at lunch waiting for you to come in. You and Bucky had been dating for six months. When you started as the new English teacher, Bucky's friend and principal of the school, Steve, assigned him to show you around and introduce you to the other staff. He wasn't thrilled about showing around the new teacher and even asked Steve to assign someone else to do it. However, once Bucky saw you standing in the front office, he reconsidered and hastily left Steve's office to show you around the school...and maybe also to ask you out.
Bucky watched as other teachers streamed into the lounge, but you were nowhere to be seen. Sam and Wanda sat down with him, but he ignored them, still searching for you.
"Where's Y/n?" Wanda asked.
"I don't know. I haven't seen her all day and she wouldn't answer her phone this morning." Bucky responded.
He was beginning to worry about you. Since you started, you hadn't missed a day of work. You were always early and were usually the first one into the lounge at lunchtime. He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed your number again. This time the call went straight to voicemail. Pocketing his phone, he huffed and looked back at the empty doorway of the lounge.
"I'm sure she's fine. Something probably just came up." Sam said.
"Maybe. I'm gonna go check her classroom." Bucky stood and walked out of the lounge.
Bucky wove his way through the hallways and ran into Steve as he rounded the corner to the hallway where your class was located.
"Hey, Buck. What's wrong?" Steve asked when he noticed the worried look on Bucky's face.
"Nothing. I just haven't seen Y/n today and she isn't answering her phone."
"Oh, Y/n is out sick today. Sounded like a pretty bad cold when I spoke to her this morning. I completely forgot to let you know. Sorry, man."
Bucky's face fell. He loved being able to see you throughout the day. Catching your eye down the hall and seeing your irresistible smile always made his days better. The way you were so engaged with your students warmed his heart. He could tell you truly loved your job and wanted to make a difference in your student's lives. It was one of the things he admired most about you and one of the reasons why he had found himself falling in love with you.
