Today was your birthday and you woke up excited. It was your first birthday being part of the Avengers and you were looking forward to spending the day with people that you had come to view as family. Honestly, you were looking forward to spending it with anyone. You hadn't celebrated your birthday in over a decade because you didn't have anyone who cared enough to acknowledge the day.
The only downside was that your boyfriend, Bucky, was on a mission and wouldn't be able to celebrate with you. The mission was only supposed to last two weeks, but it had stretched on for over a month. You walked out of your room and down to the kitchen with a smile on your face. Steve and Nat were sitting at the counter talking while Wanda and Vision were at the stove cooking.
"Morning everyone." You said happily.
"Morning." They said back then returned to what they were doing.
Your heart sank a little, but you tried giving them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they were just consumed with what they were doing and they'd tell you happy birthday any minute. You grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge and turned to look at Nat and then Wanda.
"Nat, Wanda, do you want to grab lunch later? There's this new cafe down the street I've been wanting to try and I hear they give you a free cookie on your birth–"
"Sorry, babe. Can't today. Loads of paperwork." Nat said and walked out of the kitchen.
"What about you, Wands?"
"Sorry, I'm training with Vis today. Maybe next week." She smiled at you and stirred whatever was in the pot on the stove.
"Steve?" You asked, looking over at him.
"I wish I could, but I have a meeting with Tony this afternoon." He shrugged.
"O-oh. No problem." You gave him a weak smile and walked out of the kitchen back to your room. They had forgotten your birthday. Maybe you were more of an outsider than you thought. The rest of the team had been together for years, it wouldn't be odd for them to keep someone new outside the inner circle.
Steve furrowed his eyebrows at you as you walked out. You were normally a ray of sunshine, but your shoulders were slumped and you left the room looking deflated. It didn't sit right with him.
"Was that weird to either of you?" Steve asked Wanda and Vision.
"She probably just misses Bucky." Wanda responded.
"Maybe, but it seemed like something more." Steve pondered.
"I'm sure Y/n will be happily surprised when Sergeant Barnes returns from his mission later today." Vision added.
"Bucky's coming back today?" Steve turned and placed his elbows on the counter.
"Yes. He instructed us to keep it a secret from Y/n as he wanted to surprise her." Vision said.
"Good. Maybe that will cheer her up. It just feels odd when she's sad." Steve turned back to look at the kitchen door, feeling like he was forgetting something.
~
You spent the rest of the morning in your room. Bucky hadn't called to wish you happy birthday, but he was probably too busy to call or text you. You could understand why you hadn't heard from him, but none of the others had said a word to you. At least you knew that if Bucky were there, he would have woken you up singing a horrible rendition of the birthday song. You were actually considering spending the rest of the day curled up in bed with the blanket pulled over your head, but you didn't want to sulk. So you didn't.
You walked out of your room and through the hallways of the tower ignoring anyone you passed. Steve and Tony tried to call after you, but you kept walking and headed towards the elevator and out of the tower.
