"James? Are you here?"
You walked into his house using the key from under the doormat and dropped your coat onto the closest chair. It had become your habit when coming over to his house that, instead of waiting for him to let you in, you'd just use his spare. You had a feeling that he was also trying to avoid you as much as possible. Since the night you told him things were moving too fast, he only spoke to you to ask how you were doing or to instruct you on what he needed done. It was awkward and you felt a sharp pain in your chest when he gave you the same sad smile he did the morning after he first fed on you.
Speaking of feeding, James should be in the kitchen waiting to feed, but he wasn't in his normal spot. There hadn't been a repeat of what happened the first time he fed on you. He would bite you, drink as quickly as possible, and then give you his blood to help you heal. There was minimal touching and even less talking. Once you cleaned up and he made sure you were okay, he'd walk you to the door and say goodbye before ushering you out of the house. Every time he gave you his blood, you could feel his loneliness and sadness. Once the blood bond faded, you felt your own sadness. You felt empty.
There was an undeniable bond between you and James, but the thought of falling in love with him scared you. He was, by all accounts, immortal. Your lifespan would be a mere moment to him while he would consume your whole life.
The other thought that worried you was the fact that you would age while he stayed the same. He would tire of you once your youth and beauty faded. If you felt such a strong connection to him after only four months of knowing him, you could only imagine how attached you would become to him after years had passed. If he decided one day that you weren't enough, that was a heartbreak you weren't sure you would survive.
For the last week, you had been building up the courage to talk to him. You told yourself everyday that as soon as you saw him, you'd tell him why you were scared, but everyday you chickened out. With the way your stomach was twisting, tonight was going to turn out to be no different.
You walked through the house, occasionally calling out for James, but the first floor was silent. Halfway up the stairs to the second floor, you heard the knob jiggle on the front door and then a soft creak as it was pushed open. He must have been out and forgot to let you know he was running late. You turned around to head back down the stairs, but paused when you heard giggling.
"I could've handled him myself, Bucky." She had a thick Russian accent, but her voice was surprisingly melodic yet raspy.
You peeked over the banister to see James standing with a beautiful blonde. She had green eyes with a tint of brown to them. He was smiling down at her as she looked at him in faux annoyance.
"I know, but when he tried to touch you I just couldn't stop myself."
"You're always so protective. It's kind of adorable." She reached up and patted his cheek before turning and walking towards the kitchen.
"What are you talking about? I'm extremely adorable." He said, turning to follow her but his steps faltered. His head raised slightly and his nostrils flared as if had caught a scent he wasn't expecting. His eyes closed for a moment and he inhaled deeply.
"Come have a drink with me, darling." The woman called out.
James opened his eyes and looked around him before shaking his head and walking off to the kitchen. Anger bloomed inside you and you felt foolish for believing you could ever be anything more than a blood bag. It had been him who flirted with you, him who kissed you, and him who said you were important to him. Now he was with another woman, acting as if none of the things that were said or done ever mattered.
