"Sweetheart, you don't know who he is?" Steve asked in a gentle tone.

"No. Should I?" You said quietly.

"Y/n, this is Bucky. He's been your friend for years." Steve replied.

Your eyes fell on Bucky and he saw it, or rather lack of it. There was no recognition in your eyes. Not even a spark that you had any idea who he was. He felt his heart shatter in his chest and his eyes filled with tears. He cleared his throat and swallowed hard, trying not to cry in front of you. He looked at Steve and shoved his hands in his pockets.

"I'm going to wait in the hall." He whispered, afraid that if he spoke any louder he would break.

He paused as he was walking out the door when he heard you speak once more, your voice barely a whisper.

"I'm sorry I don't remember you, Bucky."

He looked back at you and smiled as a few tears escaped his eyes.

"It's okay, babydoll. You will."

Bucky shut the door behind him as he left the room, missing the way your brow furrowed at the nickname. He walked down the hall until he found an empty room. Ducking inside and closing the door, he pressed his back against it and slid down to the floor. He let his sadness consume him. This was his punishment. It had to be. Instead of being given the chance to fix his mistakes, you had been taken from him completely.

His chest ached to the point where he almost wondered if he was having a heart attack. His throat tightened as he cried harder than he ever had. His eyes were swollen and his head was pounding, but he couldn't stop his breakdown. Overwhelming grief and loss rounded out the storm raging inside him. Is this how you felt whenever you saw him with someone or had to listen to him tell Steve about the various women he hooked up with? He clutched his hand to his chest and sobbed harder thinking about you curled up like he was now, sobbing and your chest aching because of him.

When he was finally able to calm down, he went to the sink in the corner of the room and splashed cool water over his face. He walked back into the hall to find Steve leaned against the wall opposite the room. Bucky knew he looked like hell, but he didn't care enough to hide how he was feeling.

"How'd you know I was in there?" Bucky asked.

"I, um, I could hear you crying from the hall." Steve said, looking down at the floor then back to Bucky. "Are you okay?"

"No. I'm not, but I will be. I'm going to help her remember me." Bucky said with determination in his eyes.

"Bucky...do you think that's the best idea?" Steve peeked up at Bucky with a raised brow.

Bucky looked at Steve bewildered. Was he implying that it's best you forgot him?

"Please tell me you're not saying what I think you are." Bucky said, walking closer to Steve and squinting his eyes at him.

"I'm just saying that, maybe, it's for the best if she...doesn't remember. She was in a lot of pain the night you brought that girl home. Do you really want her to feel that pain all over again once the memories resurface?" Steve furrowed his brow.

"But to forget me? Completely forget me and all the good times we did have together? I can't live in a world where I have all these amazing memories with her and I'm just a blank space in her mind. I'm going to make her remember." Bucky spat.

"I-I don't think I can let you do that. I can't see her hurt like that again, Bucky. It wasn't just hell on her, it was hell on me too."

"So are you trying to save yourself or Y/n?" Bucky asked incredulously.
