Bucky ushered you into the bar and to a table in the back. His heart was racing and his palms were sweaty. He couldn't remember ever being this nervous when it came to a woman. It was foreign and a bit frustrating. He couldn't mess this up. There was no room for error or else you would slip through his fingers again. When you were seated, he walked back up to the bar and ordered you both a beer. He placed one of the bottles in front of you and took a seat.
It was awkward as you both sat there not saying anything. He didn't know how to start. Did he just come out and tell you about Brock? Did he start off with how he felt? He was going to fuck this up. He breathed a sigh of relief when you spoke to him.
"You didn't call me."
Damnit, he said he'd call you after your workout and he forgot. In his defense, he was lost in his own world most of the afternoon after seeing you with Brock.
"Sorry, doll. After I dropped my sister at home, I had to rush into work and I was busy with clients the rest of the afternoon."
You nodded and took a sip of your beer.
"How's your sister?"
"She's fine. It was a bad sinus infection, but I wanted her to make sure it wasn't turning into pneumonia."
"You're a good big brother. Kinda makes me wish I had siblings growing up. Someone to watch out for me."
And there was his opening.
"I'll watch out for you, doll." Bucky locked eyes with you. "About the whole Brock situation..."
"Did you seriously ask me here to try and talk me out of it?" You questioned and drained your beer.
"No. I mean, I did want to talk to you about it, but I missed being able to see you today and just wanted to spend a little extra time with you. Just me and my doll."
Your face flushed and it had nothing to do with the alcohol. Bucky wanted to spend time with you. His doll.
"About Brock. I don't think you should go out with him."
"Why not?"
"You're not his type, Y/n." Bucky said.
"What's that supposed to mean?" You asked defensively.
"Guys like Brock don't date women like you."
"What the fuck does that mean, Bucky?"
You leaned back against the back of the booth and fought the tears welling in your eyes. Hearing him echo your exact thought from earlier in the day hurt. Women like you. Saying it about yourself was a normal occurrence, but hearing those words slip past Bucky's lips burned a hole straight through your heart.
Realization sparked in Bucky and he thought about how that sounded. He meant women looking for a relationship. He knew you wanted a relationship, not a one night stand. Brock didn't do relationships. He made women think that's what he wanted, but then he'd pull a bait and switch and once he had gotten what he wanted, he never called or spoke to them again.
Your face contorted into a mixture of heartbreak and anger. He saw tears gathering along the bottom of your eyes and how hard you were trying not to let them fall.
"Cat got your tongue, Barnes? Chubby women like me can't pull a man like Brock. That's what you meant, wasn't it? Just because you wouldn't look twice at me doesn't mean another man can't see what I have to offer."
"No, doll! That isn't what I meant at all!" Bucky frantically tried to defend himself.
"Really? Cause that's what it sounded like. I think I'm going to go. Also, I think it's best if I cancel the rest of the sessions we have scheduled. That way you don't have to be seen with a woman like me." You seethed.
You slid out of the booth and walked out of the bar. Bucky rushed after you, catching you just a few feet down the sidewalk. He turned you to face him and saw tears streaming down your face.
"Y/n, please just give me a moment to explain. I swear to you that I didn't mean that the way it sounded."
"Bucky, just stop! I was stupid to think that you could ever see me as anything more than your client. I never should've listened to Nat. I got my hopes up, just to have them shattered in a matter of minutes. I'm going to make this easy on you, Bucky. You don't need to worry about being seen with me or trying to let me down easy. If I see you, I'll make sure to keep my distance."
A sob escaped you and you knew it was time to go before you completely broke down on the sidewalk in front of a shitty, hole in the wall bar.
"Goodbye, Bucky." You whispered.
"Doll..." Bucky said weakly as he watched you walk away from him.
His own tears were now falling, gaining the attention of passersby. How did this go so horribly wrong? If you had just let him explain then the outcome would have been completely different. You wanted more from him and he blew it because you misunderstood what he was trying to say.
He watched you until you disappeared from his view. Brushing the tears from his cheeks, he turned and began walking to his car. You thought he didn't want to be seen with you, didn't want to touch you, or have his hands running over your curves. He wanted all of you and he wasn't ashamed of that. Next time he saw you, he was going to grab you and kiss you. It didn't matter if it was in the middle of the packed gym or on a busy city sidewalk. He was going to prove that you were meant to be his.
