"Here's what's gonna happen" he said to her, giving her a pointed look and either tapping or rubbing the toy on her. "I'm gonna edge you... and I'm gonna watch. But there are 2 rules."
"Rules?" she quizzically stared a him.
"Yeah" he answered.

Lately, Eli thought that the group's dynamic was slowly going back to normal, though it seemed like they didn't think so.
What made him see the change was that, one time, Jessica had borrowed his iPad for the weekend so she could do what they had to do for one of their lectures. When she returned it, the screen was broken. She had made sure to explain, in detail, what had happened more than a thousand times and told Eli she'd get it fixed for him.
Or, in the case that he didn't want it fixed, she'd still fix it and keep it and then buy him another one.
That happened around 3 weeks ago and, since then, Eli noticed they spoke more and for longer but, somehow, not in a way that was convincing to people (aka the group).
When Eli drove her home that day, it seemed like she couldn't help but feel bad. She had turned to him in her seat and didn't say anything for some time, so Eli quickly looked at her and then back at the road. She was smiling.
The most heartwarming smile he'd ever seen.
"Yes?" he shook his head with a chuckle of his own.
"I bought a new iPad for you but-" she was cut off by his heavy sigh and playful eye roll, pretending to be frustrated.
"I've never met someone who just doesn't listen... like, even Jason listens to me better than you do" he said to her.
He briefly looked at her again and saw a pouty frown on her face. Immediately, he broke character and started laughing.
"What? Why are you looking at me like that?"
"I got you a replacement and you're complaining" she mumbled, crossing her arms and kissing her teeth.
"But I did tell you that it was okay, did I not?" he asked, chuckling.
"Well, I bought it anyway because I know for a fact that, if you broke my iPad, I'd take you to the store myself so you could get me a new one" she rolled her eyes but still giggled when Eli started laughing again.
"Oh wow, now I know not to break your stuff" he shook his head again.
"It's at home, though" she said, turning to him again. "Wait a minute when you drop me off, I'll get it for you."
"Can I just come up?" Eli asked. "For... for a bit...?"
Now, we all know that he was dying to spend more time with her but he wasn't sure if she was going to accept that. So, it didn't come as a surprise when she went quiet for a minute.
He was about to say that he needed to urgently use the restroom, which he actually did, but then she gave him a cute side eye.
"If you take the kitchen, you're more than welcome to stay... for a while..." she smiled.
"Say less" he smiled too. "What you wanna eat?"
But when he left her house, the iPad didn't go with him. Why? Well, I don't know either.
He was thinking about that day, smiling like an idiot, and leaning against the kitchen island, when he heard footsteps behind him.
