(Y/n) didn't need to turn, nor did she need him to speak to know who was in the library; the scent of his pipe weed speaking volumes. A large smile spreading across her face from ear to ear, before she turned.
"Well, someone has to keep these elves on their toes. But I always found that Rivendell guards are much easier to sneak past than Mirkwood elves. I think it is because they don't have to worry about giant spiders and all the other awful nasties that haunt my grandfather's kingdom. But it still gives me a sense of achievement, when they can't detect me. Though it is grandfather, Uncle Legolas and Lord Elrond that are the real challenges. I swear to Mahal that those three could hear a flea burp from a league away........." (Y/n) laughed, as she made her way over to where the old wizard sat. Gandalf getting to his feet and hugging her as she threw her arms around him.
"That is true.....though Thranduil would probably claim that he could hear one from a league and a half..........." The two of them laughing as the wizard pulled away and looked at her.
"I believe you get more beautiful every time I see you, my dear.........."
"Well given you haven't been to the Mountain in some time.......you are too much of a stranger, Gandalf. I know mother would love to see you; and Throndir too. And although my father claims that you bring your own brand of chaos when you come, I just happen to like it. It livens up the Mountain........" (Y/n) chuckled. Taking a seat, as the wizard gestured to the chair next to him.
"I am sorry I didn't get chance to speak to you sooner. What with having uncle Glóin and Legolas, as well as Gimli with me. And then seeing Bilbo, Frodo and the others, followed by the festivities and then the Council, I have not had a moment to myself.........." (Y/n) apologised. Gandalf gently dismissing her concerns with a wave of his hand.
"There is nothing to apologise for, princess. I quite understand. It is not unusual for the Jewel of the Mountain to be in such high demand. Though I must confess I was surprised to see you here with Glóin and Gimli. I thought your father........."
"It was mother. You know father could never really say no, to her. When we got the message from Lord Elrond, I begged her to let me come to Imladris. I wanted a chance to see the world, to prove myself as mother did when she helped father; and perhaps even find..............mother agreed and persuaded father to allow me to accompany Glóin and Gimli. Though I don't think he will be pleased that I have promised Frodo that I will help him.........."
"Ah, yes.........that.........that is why I wanted to speak to you.........."
"If you are trying to dissuade me you wily old wizard, you can forget it; though I am sure that you will be much nicer about it than that blasted Gondorian. I don't care how handsome he is; he is still rude........." Her words bringing a smile to Gandalf's lips.
"I made a promise to Bilbo when I saw him that I would look after Frodo, you see; and after what that hobbit did for my mother and father, as well as all my dwarven family, I could not say no. Bilbo and Frodo are as much kin to me as any other, and family looks after one another.........."
"Please, please, (Y/n); I did not wish to try and persuade you not to join us. You are your father's daughter; a more stubborn dwarf I have still to meet, and that stubbornness has been inherited by you. I am aware that once you have set your mind on something, it is almost impossible to dissuade you. I just wished to ask you if you are sure that you know what you are getting yourself into........" Gandalf interrupted again, before placing his hand on hers and giving her one of those grandfatherly smiles he had always been so good at.
"I don't know what I am getting myself into, no.......but do any of us? I am sure that the likes of you, my uncles and Aragorn can imagine; but still, none of you can be sure. And if the hobbits, if poor Frodo are able to dismiss the uncertainty in their minds to do what is right, what is proper, then so can I. I may still be relatively young, but I feel in my heart that I can do this. I have trained from the moment I could wield a sword and axe; from when I was strong enough to pull back the drawstring of a bow, to help protect the Mountain in any way I could, and now is my chance to do that. For despite the fact that Erebor is a long way from here, if we do not do this; if we do not help Frodo get to Mount Doom, evil will come calling for the dwarves of my home, and for Mirkwood too. And I will not let that happen........." (Y/n) explained. Gandalf nodding, as his smile just that little bit bigger.
"Though I must confess that two things are troubling me.........."
"And what would they be............?"
"Firstly.........Boromir. I saw how he was at the Council; how the Ring affected him, and I cannot pretend that I liked it. I am sure that he only wants what is best for Gondor and for his people; but I swear he was going to take it, and I don't like the notion of him being around Frodo. And second.........."
"And second.........?" Gandalf queried, as (Y/n) hesitated while he relit his pipe.
"Second.......Moria. I fear going there even though my kin is there. It has been some time since the Mountain received a missive from Balin, Óin or Ori. And even though father puts it down to the fact of the argument about them digging too deep, I am scared it is more than that. Much more. I fear that something old, something evil has been awoken in those mines.......that Durin's Bane has risen from its slumber..........." She continued. Not blind to how Gandalf's grip tightened at the mention of a Balrog of Morgoth. The pair sitting there in silence for moment, as the wizard mused on her words. His frown turning back into a smile, as he seemed to shake the thoughts from his head.
"It is true that the hearts and minds of men are more easily corrupted than those of the elves and dwarves; but you and I will keep a watchful eye in the son of Denethor. And as for Moria........well, I have no intention of leading the Fellowship anywhere near there. So do not fear...........And now, as neither of us seem to be interested in sleep; why don't you tell me what has been happening in Erebor since I was last there...........?"
