Ayansh age 11
With wide eyes he watched the crystal chandelier that hung from the ceiling. Sunlight danced off its sharp crystals and bled into the room. "So big", Ayansh whispered with a wide smile. His perusal of the pristine white walls and polished floors was interrupted by a hoarse voice. "Come on boy. I don't have time for your antiques", he flinched at the sharp tone. With furrowed brows he followed as he wondered why there was this sudden change in mood. "Ghar pe toh sab theek tha, yaha aate hi kya hua? ", he mumbled.
With hurried steps he followed and took in his surroundings. An old man approached them and bowed before them. Ayansh stood flustered as he questioned why this man was bowing before him. It is the kids that show respect to elders, that's what maa taught me, he wondered as he wordlessly climbed the stairs.
His steps halted and he walked towards the open window in the stairwell. "Wow", he exclaimed in amazement as he saw the vast expanse of plush green lawn. His eyes followed the path lined with tall trees that sprouted yellow and orange leaves. At the end of the pathway was a small house-like structure. Before he could think more of it, the voice scolded him again and he ran up the stairs.
"This is your room. One of the servants will give you your dinner", he hated that clipped tone. "But won't we have dinner at the dining table?", he asked as the image of the long shiny table lined with beautiful chairs surfaced in his mind. His voice dripped with excitement. "The view from the dining room is so nice!! And the table-", his words were cut off as a sharp slap landed on his cheek. He could feel the skin get heated and tears lined his eyes.
"God, do you ever shut up?!!", he shrunk back in humiliation. "The servant will bring you dinner to your room. Fucking have it here", his eyes widened at the word. He had heard a few kids from his school say that word and he remembered how the teachers had scolded them and asked them to not repeat it.
The loud bang of the door startled him as it got shut. Ignoring the lingering embarrassment, he looked at his room. A big bed, a lamp, a bathroom, a cupboard-
His dimples appeared as the boy ran to the window with a huge smile. All animosity disappeared as joy filled his heart because from his window he could again see the tree lined path and the house. "What a view", he said and wished to have a phone or a camera to capture it.
That evening, when the sun had set and the moon hung from the sky, a restless Ayansh tiptoed down the stairs. He checked the hallway and on seeing no sign of anyone he crept behind the pillars. His eyes brightened like the stars in delight as his bare feet touched the soft grass and his lungs filled with fresh air. Before he could take a step forward towards his destination, a hand clasped his shoulder.
He turned back sharply to be faced with a very angry and agitated expression. "You never listen do you?", Ayansh gulped at the hard tone. "I just wanted to see the backhouse-", he tried to reason but was cut off by laughter. A weird crawling sensation was felt on his skin at the sound of the laugh. It doesn't sound right, he thought.
