The silence of the ocean was only broken by the hiss of your breathing apparatus.

The vibrant coral reef was only feet away now. As always, it was the most beautiful thing you'd ever seen. It was like swimming through a rainbow. Fish darted through pink, yellow, and orange coral.

An orange cluster caught your eye. It was like bright orange strands, waving gently with the current. You'd never seen coral or anemones move quite like that before.

Then, it moved.

Warm brown eyes, wide and unblinking, popped out of the coral. You yelped, bubbles racing upwards as you backpedaled. What you thought was coral unfurled, human arms appearing.

He appeared to be a man about your age. Your gaze drifted lower and your eyes widened as you saw his lower body was powerful orange fins, streaked with white. Not a man- a merman.

"Found you!" he said, his voice somehow clear in your ears. You blinked in disbelief.

"You were watching me?" you mouthed.

His smile became impossibly bright, like the sunlight that lit up the reef. "I've been watching you every dive. You always stop by my reef.

"I thought your hair was coral..."

He giggled, curling his fingers into a lock of it, "You like it?"

"How can I hear you? And how can you hear me?"

He began swimming a slow circle around you, not answering the question. It reminded you faintly of a shark and you wished he would stop. He tilted his head as though studying you closely.

"I don't want to scare you," he said sweetly, picking up on your fear, "but I'm glad you noticed me today."

You kicked backwards, putting distance between you and him. He was faster, keeping pace with you easily. He drifted alongside you as though he was part of the current himself.

"You almost left without saying goodbye," he pouted.

You let your arm drift to your thigh, fumbling for your knife. Your fingers found only the strap. The knife was gone.

He pouted even harder, "I'm not going to hurt you. I love you!"

The warm water seemed to run cold suddenly.

"We've spent a lot of time together," he whispered, "You watch the coral and always come back to me. You just... didn't realize it."

"I was so patient. I let you swim around, let you breathe your strange air, let you leave," He grinned again, but this time it seemed wrong, "But I can't let you go this time. Not now that you've seen me."

He reached out a hand and brushed his fingers against your arm. You pulled away immediately, shivering at how cold his skin was.

"I can take you somewhere," he whispered, "You won't have to breathe that silly air anymore."

You tried to swim upward but your limbs suddenly felt heavy and slow. Was your oxygen running out? You spotted the problem quickly- he'd loosened your regulator.

"It's better down here with me, you'll see!" he said excitedly, "I'll show you the deepest parts of the sea..."

"And no one will ever find us."
