Kita stood, motionless as a statue, at the end of his driveway. Watching. Waiting.

His uniform was crisp and free of wrinkles and not a strand of silver hair was out of place. And then, there you were, running up to him, shoes untied and a carefree smile on your face.

"You're late," Kita said. It was said as a simple fact, as if he were commenting on the weather, instead of anger or disappointment.

"I overslept," you said, rubbing the back of your neck embarrassedly, "I'll try to do better tomorrow."

"Good," Kita replied.

His lips had curved into an imperceptible smile. As if he liked that you were trying your best.

The two of you set out for school, the autumn breeze blowing gently around trees with colorful leaves. An orange leaf pulled free of its prison and gently fell toward the ground. You giggled and tried to catch it, pouting when it blew too far away.

Kita tried to look disapproving at your childish behavior, but amusement seeped in and curled his lips into another small smile.

You followed him to school like a duckling followed its mother.

Kita didn't say anything- he never did. But he noticed. He loved noticing. He loved the sound of your footsteps pattering behind his, stepping over cracks as though you believed they would break your mother's back, yet only a short distance behind.

You always walked a little to the left, just out of reach but never out of sight. If he slowed down, you slowed down. If he sped up, you sped up. Your pace was perfectly synced with his, as though you'd trained yourself to match him.

Inarizaki High came into view like an upside down "T". The sun lit the building up in a beautiful way. It was well cared for- no peeling paint or fading on the sign that declared "Inarizaki High School".

You looked ahead, seemingly enamored with the building you saw every week day, but Kita's eyes never left you. You parted your lips, as though you wanted to say something. It took a few minutes, but you finally managed to get the words out.

"Um," you swung your arms nervously, "I was thinking.. Could we go to that place by the river again after school? With the big persimmon tree? Some classmates were saying that it's really pretty this time of year.

Kita was quiet for a moment. He disliked changing plans, but for you, he could make exceptions. "Fine, but after volleyball training, and only for a little while."

Your grin returned, grateful and excited, and it put a spring in your step as you followed him. For a brief moment, his hand twitched at his side. It would be so easy to reach out and lace his fingers with yours.

The thought made his throat go dry. It wasn't time yet, he had to be patient. Because you were still learning and exploring the depth of your attachment to him.

You may be following him for now, but one day you'd walk beside him, where you belonged. And not just at school, but all the time and everywhere.

Forever.

You both made your way towards the school entrance, passing students that were hanging around the grounds. Atsumu and Osamu waved at Kita and you, and you pressed yourself against Kita's back, shyly avoiding eye contact. Shivers ran up and down his spine at the close contact.

A random student bumped into you, causing you to stumble to the side. Kita stopped walking immediately. The boy apologized without sparing you a second glance. Kita's eyes narrowed and darkness swirled with them.

He reached out and brushed invisible dust from your sleeve, where the idiot student had bumped into you. "You should be more careful," he lectured you.

"But it wasn't-"

"People don't watch where they're going," Kita replied, "You should be more aware of that fact."

And some people, he though coldly, don't know their place.

But Kita knew his place. And he knew your place as well- right next to him, somewhere only he could reach.

As the bell rang in the distance, Kita walked towards the entrance.

And you- like always- followed, completely unaware of the darkness in his heart.
