A spilled drink was the start of everything.

Mina, your close friend, was talking enthusiastically. So enthusiastically, that when she flung her arms wide open to emphasize a point, she accidentally knocked over her milk. All you could think about was the amount of mouth germs were in that deceivingly innocent carton and you stood up so fast from the table it made you dizzy.

At the same time, the man sitting across from you stood up and backed away from the table in the same way you did. You felt your breathing grow shallow as the milk spread its way towards your lunch.

It's going to ruin my food. It's going to infect everything.

You were panicking, stomach churning with nausea as breathing became difficult and your heart began to pound in your chest.

Mina grabbed her napkins and attacked the milk quickly. "It's okay," she soothed, "It's just a little bit of milk. It didn't touch your stuff."

You rummaged through your backpack and found your disinfectant wipes. You pulled out a few and scrubbed the still-wet table where the spilled milk had been.

Your friend was mostly used to your germaphobia, but even she had a joke to make- "There's no use panicking over spilt milk, girl."

The man across from you gingerly took his seat again. You took a look at him for the first time, noting his medical mask.

"Are you a germaphobe too?" the words slipped from your mouth before you had time to think. It was probably a little rude to ask, but the man looked at you like he had won the lottery. He nodded and said, "My name is Sakusa. What's yours?"

You politely told him your name, thinking very little of the encounter.

But, like you said, a spilled drink was the start of everything.

—--------------------------------

He didn't speak again for a while, but he watched.

Boy, did he watch you. You, who opened doors with disposable gloves and applied hand sanitizer after. You, who never used communal restrooms, even when you clearly had to go. You, who visibly tensed when someone coughed or sneezed, with a disgusted look on your face.

Sakusa observed all of it.

The second time he talked to you was after a seminar. You had remained behind so that you wouldn't be shoulder-to-shoulder with the people leaving the hall. When you finally exited, he was there, and he said, "You don't like crowds either."

He really was a kindred spirit, you assumed. It wasn't a question, the way he said it. You reached into your backpack for your hand sanitizer, as though you were afraid you'd somehow lost it.

"You carry the same brand as me." He held up his hand sanitizer and your eyes went wide. You had never met anyone with the same hand sanitizer. It was hard to find, medical grade, hypoallergenic, with no fragrance. Most people complained it was harsh on the skin.

But Sakusa? He clearly understood.

Maybe that's why you started complaining to him. It didn't occur to you that it could come across as annoying when you lamented the fact that you loved books but couldn't use the library because people licked their fingers before turning the pages until later, but Sakusa's attention on you was always laser-focused and he was always nodding in agreement, so you didn't think about it too much.
