Resemblance

/noun/

the state of resembling or being alike

"No, no, you misunderstand," Kuroo gave Kenma a mischievous, toothy grin, "It's not just some 'archery exhibition'. It's a girls' archery exhibition."

Kenma sighed noisily, sticking his hands deep into his pockets as the two friends walked down the street from the parking lot. There weren't many people around yet, as they were early to the event.

While an all-girls' event was right up Kuroo's alley, Kenma couldn't care less about it. He would much rather be spending his Saturday at home, playing video games, particularly his new favorite game: Waifu For Laifu.

The game was a mix of visual novel and first person competitive shooter with romance and humor. Each of the characters could be unlocked with enough affection and then used in the combat section with their unique weapons and abilities.

He was addicted to the game- breathed it like air. He had grinded for hours in order to unlock one of the most popular characters- Anna Mae. Kenma thought she was the most beautiful 2D character he had ever seen, even if she had a cheesy name.

Anna Mae came with a bow and arrow with unlockable fire and explosion powers players could add to her weapon. She always wore a school PE uniform and had her hair pulled back out of her face. The thing she loved most (almost as much as the player) was archery.

It was ironic that Kenma was on his way to watch girls with bows and arrows in real life now. It felt a little like cheating on Anna Mae.

"Front seats! Great!" Kuroo rubbed his hands together like a pleased supervillain. The two friends sat down on collapsable metal chairs that sank deep into the grass under their weight.

Kuroo's eyes immediately sought out the female archers and Kenma allowed his eyes to wander across the field. A half hour later of pure boredom, the showcase began. The first girl went, followed by the second. Then, after a brief pause, the third archer stepped up.

The third archer wore her hair swept back and a serene expression on her face. Kenma's mouth dropped as he looked you up and down.

You were a dead ringer for Anna Mae.

Your skin tone, hair color, and eye color were a perfect match. Every beauty mark was in the right place. The hair cut was the same. You wore a white T-shirt, black gym shorts, and light blue sneakers with her socks barely peeking out, just like in his game.

You drew back the bowstring gracefully and let the arrow fly. His brain short circuited as the arrow hit dead center on the target. It's her!

Well, that was an exaggeration. You weren't really Anna Mae- you weren't an anime-styled sprite. But even the calm expression on your face matched her default expression.

Kenma waited impatiently for the exhibition to end, eyes stuck on your face, even as you stood within a throng of friends. As soon as the last archer set down her bow, he leapt to his feet and raced towards where the archers were hanging out.

He could hear you talking and could barely believe his ears. Your voice was so close to the voice actor's in the game. How? He wondered, feeling a little dizzy. How is she so close to Anna Mae?

Parents made their way towards their children and Kenma choked on his spit when he saw your father. He remembered the picture of the game developer from the game's website and matched it with the man he was seeing.

Just like that, the pieces fell into place. Anna Mae wasn't a fictional character. Not exactly. She was based on you.

Kenma had been obsessed with Anna Mae for so long now. Months, maybe a year. He had replayed all of her dialogue lines over and over, and had her laugh memorized. The same laugh now coming from your mouth as you talked with your friends and father.

"What's wrong?" Kuroo approached Kenma and clapped him on the back with one big hand, "You look like you've seen a ghost."

Kenma shook his head, "No, not a ghost."

"Well, I'm going to talk up the girls," Kuroo snickered, "You coming with?"

And talk to the 3D version of my game waifu? Kenma felt dizzy just considering the idea. Could he really handle that?

"I'll head home," he muttered, "Have fun."

—--------------------------------------------------------------

As soon as he reached his computer, Kenma was typing away at the search bar, looking up archery competitions in the area and pictures from your school's archery club on the school website. From that, he learned your name, but didn't find it all that important.

To him, you were Anna Mae.

Kenma pulled open the game and navigated to the section that would allow him to speak with you. The game was being updated all the time, but there were no new updates regarding you this time.

"Hello! I missed you!" Anna Mae said with a sweet smile- one that looked just like yours. Looking at the character now, he could see the resemblance to you more than ever.

"I missed you too," Kenma whispered. He opened up the gallery and looked back at the CGs he'd unlocked. He could picture you in all of those scenes.

He wondered if you liked chocolate ice cream like Anna Mae did. He wondered if you liked getting up early to watch the sunrise. He wondered if you would wait in his bedroom and tell him you missed him... just like Anna Mae.

Kenma sat back in his gaming chair, listening to the soft music in the background. He swapped between the game and the pictures he'd pulled up of you in archery competitions. In one picture, you were in the background with a hand on your hip, just like Anna Mae's sprites sometimes did.

He opened the game again and the voice actor's voice played through his headset. "When you're not here, I feel so lonely. So please stay... always..."

"Yeah," Kenma's lips twitched into a smile, "I'm not going anywhere."

—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You let an arrow fly from your fingers and watched as it hit directly in the middle of the target. You smiled and wiped sweat from your brow. Today was a hot day, so you were glad when your coach said you could put down the bow and get a drink.

You collapsed onto a bench and raised your water bottle to your lips. To your surprise, you were approached by a boy with blond hair who you didn't recognize from your school. In fact, he was wearing a sweatshirt with the word "NEKOMA" written across it.

"You're really good at archery, Anna Mae," he said softly.

"Uh, thanks," you replied awkwardly, "That's not my name though."

"I know," the way he said it was like he was sharing a secret or inside joke with you.

"Do you go here?" you asked unnecessarily.

He shook his head, looking at the ground shyly.

"Well, thanks for watching," you said, standing up and deciding to head inside. Practice was over and you couldn't stand the heat any longer.

The boy's eyes flashed and his hand shot out, grabbing your wrist in an ironclad grip. "Wait, where are you going? You said you didn't want to be alone!"

"Huh?" you stared at him. When had you said anything like that?

"And I'm not going anywhere," he said, pulling you closer.
