The sea had its own song.

Not a soft melody, like many would expect, but a feral one. The crashing of towering waves hitting sharp rocks and the whistle of strong winds. You'd grown used to it, as much as one could.

Living in the lighthouse was a lonely life. The sound of the sea was all you heard most nights, along with the slight creaking of the beacon as it turned in circles. This part of the beach was restricted, so you had no visitors.vYou had no family, no friends. Who would even want to visit you except teenagers wanting to break in the "abandoned" lighthouse?

At least, that's what you told yourself. Lately, you couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching. Not from the endless sands of the beach, not from the hotel across from the beach, but from the sea itself.

During one calm night, you swore you saw him: a man whose top half was exposed against a huge rock, his bottom half hidden beneath the sea foam. His hair was jet black and his smile was sharp-toothed and smug.

The light fell on him, his gaze on you with an underlying hunger that made you back away from the window and out of sight. Your heart pounded in your chest and you placed a hand over it, trying to calm down.

When you returned to the window, he was gone, leaving you to wonder if he was ever there in the first place.

Sitting by the window near the rocks, you giggled nervously. Of course he was never there! The waves were too high, those rocks too slippery. No human could get to that spot in the ocean.

But when the day turned dark, you saw him again.

He was in the same place as that day, with the same smirk on his face. You rubbed your eyes, waiting for him to disappear, a figment of your imagination. Instead, he raised an arm and waved at you.

At that very moment, the lighthouse plunged into darkness.

Impossible, you thought, I just changed the lightbulb and the generator's fine!

You hurried to change the lightbulb, assuming that you had just picked a bad replacement. You stopped mid-motion when you heard the wet, squelching noise.

"The rocks are slippery, yeah," came a playful voice, barely muffled by the door, "And the waves are nasty this time of year. Bet you're wondering how I got up there."

You clapped a hand over your mouth to stay silent, afraid he could hear the beating of your heart.

"But I'm not human, sweetheart. Now, why don't you open the door before I break it down?"
