"Watch out for sharks!"

It was the same cry every day. From your mother to your father to the guards of the city. If one thing was drilled into your head since you were little, it was that mersharks were evil.

Evil, evil creatures that tore mermaids apart with their sharp teeth and strong jaws. You heard rumors that they liked to play with their food before killing you.

So you kept an eye out as you headed to the coral reef to admire its beauty. The moonlight lit up the coral just right, shimmering on the little fish's scales. You were too busy watching the fish to notice the signs.

It wasn't until all the fish disappeared did you realize something was wrong. The water suddenly felt colder and there was an eerie silence. You turned around, "Hello? Is anyone there?"

Don't be stupid, you thought, just get out of here!

You turned to swim back towards the city, but stopped in place as a voice spoke to you.

"I finally found you."

You turned around slowly and the life left your body. Utter shock and horror filled you.

Mershark!

His body was lithe and toned, with a deep blue shark tail. His blue eyes were fixed on you like a predator looks at prey.

"You're real," he murmured, slowly swimming closer.

Your heart stuttered as he came into arm's reach.

"You shouldn't have come out here alone."

"I didn't mean to!" you protested, "I was just-"

He began to circle you. You felt like a minnow surrounded by larger fish. Trapped and desperately not ready to be eaten. The cold water swirled around you as you tracked the mershark's every movement.

"You always come to the reef at night."

You stopped breathing. He'd been watching you? How had you not noticed?

"I waited... but you never noticed me."

His tone was as cold as the water. Your scales prickled at the intensity of his eyes on you. "I didn't see you, I'm sorry!

"It's fine," he interrupted. He moved towards you and you darted backwards. "Don't swim away."

Your tail lashed and you turned away, fins slicing the current as you made a break for it. You could sense him close behind, but didn't dare look around at him.

He called out to you, just on your tail.

"Let's see how long you can swim, little minnow!"
