Night was falling faster than the rain, and you had no signal, no food, and no water. You hadn't for hours.

Your throat was dry and your stomach rumbled, but there was no end in sight. All you could see were trees, trees, and more trees. Nothing looked familiar and, for all you knew, you were probably heading in circles.

Then, it happened. A long, drawn out howl, low at first then climbing in volume. You froze in place.

Wolves.

Did they usually attack humans? Did they always come in packs? Did they eat helpless women lost in their woods?

You spun around in place, looking for the source of the sound. It happened again- closer this time. Your heart pounded heavy in your chest. Backing into the bushes, you tried to head away from the sound as quickly as possible.

Suddenly, you tripped, falling on your butt onto the hard stone below.

Wait... stone?

You slowly turned around and realized you had stumbled across a cave. Was it empty? Or was this where the wolves were heading to?

Despite your fear and misgivings, you headed deeper into the cave. If for nothing else, to get out of the freezing rain. To your utmost surprise, the cave had artificial light coming from oil lamps, two mattresses on the ground, a table with two chairs, and a few knicknacks.

"Well, there definitely aren't any wolves living here," you muttered. Probably a homeless person... Hopefully they wouldn't mind you using their little camp to dry off.

You weren't alone for long. The sound of bare footsteps slapping against stone had you spinning around in alarm. The man you were faced with- black hair soaked and stuck to his handsome face- looked more surprised to see you than you were to see him.

For a long moment, neither of you spoke. Then, he asked, "Who are you?"

"I- I'm so sorry," you stammered, shivering from more than just soaking clothes, "I got lost and then I heard wolves... and I'm so cold... I came across this cave and just wanted to get out of the rain- I'm sorry, I can go now."

His expression softened and his shoulders untensed. "You're lucky you came across my cave." He walked further into the cave and sat down on the mattress on the left, "You can stay."

He motioned towards the mattress on the right, "You can sit, you know."

"But I don't want to get it all wet..." you murmured.

"I don't care," he replied. With that, you gratefully sunk onto the soft, plush mattress. Your feet ached from walking for so long and you were glad to finally rest them.

The cave was warmer than outside, but your body was still freezing. Your clothes clung to your form and every breath hurt a little. You curled up on the mattress, trying not to think about the water you were getting all over it.

The man sat across from you with an expression like he was studying you. Finally, he broke the silence by bluntly saying, "You're freezing."

"I- I'll warm up soon," you lied, wrapping your arms around your knees, "Don't worry about me."

"Too late for that," he muttered, standing up. He reached into a nearby cabinet and retrieved a folded blanket. Before you could protest, he shook it out and gently placed it over you. The weight and warmth immediately helped.

"Thank you," you clutched it tightly in your fingers.

But it wasn't enough. Your head was starting to feel heavier than the blanket and your throat became sorer by the minute. You couldn't stop a cough from exiting your mouth.

Piercing blue eyes narrowed, "You're sick."

"I'm fine-"

"You're not fine," he growled. You flinched and his face softened with guilt, "Sorry, I just don't like seeing you like this."

Like this? He didn't even know you, why would he care.

He crouched at your side and moved to put his hand against your forehead to check your temperature, but stopped an inch from your head and pulled away.

"You'll stay with me until you're all better," he said sharply, "The forest isn't safe for you."

—--------------------------------------------------------

Kageyama, as you eventually came to know him as, took care of you throughout your entire coughing and sneezing experience. He stayed by your side as often as possible, only leaving to hunt and gather berries for you and him to eat.

Sometimes, at night, you caught him staring at you. His eyes seemed to glow in the dim lighting as he watched you, chin propped up by his hand. You didn't ask why. What probably should have been creepy made you feel safe and watched over.

You battled the sickness for a few days until today, where you finally felt healthy enough to stand up and stretch. You still had a bit of a sore throat but you were no longer feverish- kicking your blanket off in fitful sleep so that Kageyama had to replace it each time.

"Kageyama?"

"Hm?" Kageyama turned from the rabbit he was cooking over a fire near the back of the cave to look at you with his full attention.

"I think I'm ready to head back to the village," you said, "Can you tell me the way?"

Kageyama was silent for a moment and the air grew heavy and tense, "You want to leave?"

"Y-yes," you couldn't figure out why you suddenly wanted to say no, "I only stayed because I was sick."

"You're not fully healed," he protested, "Leaving now would be reckless."

It was probably the most he'd ever said to you.

"It's just a sore throat, I'm fine," you replied nonchalantly.

Kageyama approached you and, with an inhuman growl, he said, "You're not leaving."

Then, something in him began to change. Black hair- no, fur- rippled across his body as it began to shift, his face elongating as he fell onto all fours.

Terrified, you took a few steps back, but stopped when he growled again.

"Werewolf," your voice came out as a whisper. It seemed impossible, but there he was, a not fully-wolf, wolf.

"Promise you'll stay," came his voice from the wolf's mouth, "I need you, please..."

You tried to say something, anything, but nothing came out of your gaping mouth.

"I knew since I met you that you were my mate," Kageyama pleaded, "Please stay!"

"I- I..." words failed you again. Instead, you turned and began to run. You didn't even make it out of the cave when something bowled into you, sending you crashing to the stone floor.

"Fine," Kageyama growled right into your ear, "We'll do this the hard way. You'll be my mate, no matter what I have to do."
