I was chopping some wood for the fire when Natalie found me, greeting me with a nod as she chewed on something. I stopped what I was doing as she held out her hands to reveal some berries.

"Found some when I was foraging," she explained after she swallowed.

I hummed, appreciative, and accepted the handful. "Awesome. Thanks, Nat."

She flashed me a smile as she took a seat on the log next to me, eating some more of her own stash. I took a mini break, eating too as we chatted about nothing in particular.

When I'd finished them, I was about to get back to chopping when Mari found me for a moment. She glanced at Natalie with a nod in greeting before looking to me.

"Have you seen my bikini?" she asked casually.

I stifled a smile. "You planning to go swimming?"

"Tanning actually," she corrected, not picking up on my amusement. "So? You seen it?"

"No idea, sorry, Mar," I said with an apologetic smile. "Try Akilah. She was rearranging our shit this morning."

Mari groaned like I was a massive inconvenience. "Fine. Thanks."

I waved goodbye as she walked away, no doubt to find Akilah. Focusing back on the wood again, I began to chop it into smaller pieces.

"I'm seeing it now," Natalie mumbled to herself as she watched Mari leave, then looked back to me. "You said you grew up together?"

I chuckled. "Yeah, pretty much. I was always at Y/BF/N's and she and Mari used to spend a lot of time together. She became my little sister too."

Natalie hummed, as if piecing this together in her mind. "That explains why you're so close. You guys aren't exactly each other's type."

I paused, quirking a brow with amusement as I looked at her.

"As friends, I mean," she quickly added, realising how it sounded.

"But you didn't know that until the other day," I reminded her, finding the way she squirmed adorable.

"Still," she said dismissively, awkwardness seeping through. "Even then. It didn't make sense to me."
