"Tristan, could you wake Victoria up from her nap while I put the last minute stuff in the bag?" You smiled sweetly at him and he stood up from the kitchen counter, gave you a kiss on the forehead and made his way to your two year old daughters room.
You packed the lunches for everybody, spare clothes, Victoria's sunhat, some sun cream, sunglasses, water, towels and swimming clothes not forgetting all of the everyday essentials you needed for Victoria such as nappies, bottles, formula and baby wipes.
You put the bag in the boot of the car as well as Victoria's pushchair and made your way back into the house, ready to help Tristan if he was struggling to get her ready but to your surprise, they were both ready.
Victoria looked adorable in her little pink swimming costume with a frilly tutu attached and a rubber ring around her middle with her hair tied in pigtails. "Mummy, daddy made me pretty" she giggled, reaching out to you in Tristan's arms.
"He did didn't he, sweetie? Are you ready to go to the beach?" You smiled at her and she beamed, nodding her head and wriggling in Tristan's arms.
"Off we go then" Tristan spoke, bouncing her in his hold.
Victoria slept for the majority of the car ride which was a relief, neither of you thought you would be able to deal with three hours of "are we there yet?" and it was best that she slept now so she wouldn't be tired at the beach, you wanted her to remember every moment of her first time at the beach.
When you finally arrived you woke Victoria, unbuckled her from her car seat and walked down to the beach with her in her pushchair past all of the shops on the way there. From the corner of your eye you saw an ice cream shop, the one that you used to go to with your family when you were younger. You stopped Tristan and pointed the shop out to him, next to it was a shop which sold nets and buckets and spades, this gave Tristan an idea.
You took Victoria into the ice cream parlour and let her choose whatever she wanted as well as buying one for yourself and Tristan while he went to the shop next door. He was determined to make this the best day ever.
After you were all sorted you continued your walk to the beach. Finding the perfect spot, you laid down the towels and set everything up while Tristan got the net and bucket and spade ready for Victoria after she finished her ice cream.
"Oh Vic look at you" you laughed, looking for the baby wipes in the bag. In the process of her trying to eat her ice cream she had managed to get it all over her face and hands. She was more ice cream than baby at the moment, cleaning her up, she giggled the entire time and wriggled around in her pushchair, prompting you to take her out of it.
"Look at this Victoria, look what daddy bought for you" she turned her attention to Tristan and reached out for the net, placing it on her head one she had it in her grip. "I think that's the cutest thing we'll catch all day" Tristan mumbled to you, a grin prominent on his face.
"Why don't I cover her in sun cream head to toe and then we can take her rock pooling?" You suggested.
"Of course, I want to catch a starfish with you both, I think she'd love it" you were pretty sure it was Tristan who would love catching the starfish but you let him think that you believed him.
"Come on Victoria, let's see what we can find in the water" her little face lit up and she began to clap and bounce around on the towel.
You picked her up and held her against your hip as Tristan picked up the net and bucket, making your way to the rocks.
Tristan filled the bucket with water, some rocks and sand while you took Victoria to the pools that had formed in the rocks, pointing out all of the sea life that was there.
Tristan returned and sat with you both at the small pool with the bucket in the middle of you. You had Victoria on you knee while Tristan fished around in the water with the net.
Tristan found some small fish, a crab, some shrimp and a lot of seaweed and Victoria got very excited at everything that was found. She would giggle, clap and reach out to touch everything. However Tristan looked a little bit disappointed.
Letting Victoria play with the water a little bit you leaned over to Tristan. "Hey" you whispered.
"Hey" he responded.
"What's wrong, you look disappointed?" You frowned slightly.
"Nothing, it's just that, I really wanted to find a starfish for Vic. When I was younger, I remember rock pooling with my mum and dad and this one time we found a starfish and everybody that was rock pooling around us came to see it and we were all watching it and admiring it and it was such a special moment between us as a family and everyone else on that part of the beach that it was the best day of my childhood and I'll never forget it. I just want it to be the same for Victoria." He sighed.
"Tristan, she'll remember this day with a smile for the rest of her live because it was the first time she had ever been to the beach and mummy and daddy made a big fuss over her and everybody was happy. Not because she saw a starfish for the first time." You spoke softly.
"I suppose so. I'm so happy you agreed to be my wife, you make everything better. I love you." He smiled.
"And I love you" you smiled. You both leaned in and gave each other a sweet kiss remembering that Victoria was sat on your knee.
"Mummy, daddy look what I got." Victoria squealed, bouncing around in your lap. You both turned to look at her and Tristan's face lit up.
Somehow, Victoria had managed to find and pull out of the water a starfish.
"Oh baby girl you found a starfish!" You fussed, giving her kisses all over her head and face and tickling her tummy, making her laugh loudly.
Safe to say that Tristan's day was now made as he took the starfish off of Victoria and placed it in the bucket.
After admiring the starfish and returning to your place on the beach for lunch and making sand castles and digging a hole to the other side of the world, burying Tristan in the sand which may or may not have been your idea and taking Victoria for a paddle in the sea, you made your way back to the car.
The journey home was quiet, Victoria was asleep in her car seat in the back with her cuddly seal in her arms that you had bought for her on the way back and Tristan was concentrating on the road. You sat looking out of the window, playing with the wedding ring on your finger and smiling slightly to yourself as you thought about how lucky you had truly gotten. Tristan reached over and took your hand in his, prompting you to look over at him and giving him a lazy smile while he winked at you, smiling afterwards. You remained in that position the entire way home.
