Just because I know school is coming up for many, and I know most of my followers are my age or younger, I'm making a back to school/freshman advice thing. I feel fairly qualified to give advice on this topic because I am going to be a senior.
First off, I'll address that freshman are 9th graders for those you who don't use the US system of calling grades things like freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. It's also Year 10 in the UK I think. That's if you start with Year 1. You see the US likes to be different and we don't start with Year 1, we start with kindergarten which is just German for child garden . . . yes weird, I know. Can you just imagine that? A garden of children. It's not really a garden of children. It's just kids who are like 5 or 6 in their first year of school and we go up to 12th grade instead of Year 13. So, I'm going to be a senior so 12th grade (AKA Year 13).
Next, I got this idea when I was browsing YouTube videos and scrolling through Twitter. I saw this post where they were talking about advice for high school freshman and I thought the tweet was funny and kind of true. I'll quote the relevant part of the tweet for you. "read The Perks of Being a Wallflower and do everything Charlie did (minus the drugs)." A pretty true thing. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a wonderful book. It was some mature content in it, so if you are squeamish about things like drugs, sex, and masturbation then don't read it. But Charlie, doesn't confine himself to himself. He goes out and meets new people and tries new things. That's the part you should take away from the book.
So now we can get into the real advice part of this video.
1. Work harder than you currently are because I know you have it in you.
Trust me, it takes work and remember that colleges look at what you do all 4 years of high school. I mean they mostly focus on the first three years since you usually apply in the beginning/middle of your senior year. A lot of people will tell you colleges only look at your junior year (11th grade or Year 12), but that's false. They look at your grades throughout high school. They look for progress and steadiness in your grades.
2. Don't quit or not go out for certain sports because you think they'll take up too much time.
Yes, sports and extra-circulars take up time. I know they do. I'm in marching band, pep band, and concert band. It takes time. I have marching band practice almost every day after from the beginning of the school year mid-August through the beginning of November. It takes time, but guess what? It looks good on college applications if they see you did sports/extra-circulars. It could mean the difference between a college choosing you over someone else.
3. Don't allow your friends to define who you are. Break away from them if they don't accept you for you!
Don't let friends tell you who to be. If they don't accept you, then they aren't a real friend. A real friend accepts you for you. Friends should be happy, accepting, and understanding.
For example, my friends were extremely accepting of the fact that I'm demi and antagonistic atheist. I was extremely accepting of the fact that two of my friends are bi. Another one is ace. One of my friends is completely atheist. Two others don't know what they believe. The point is we're all accepting of who each other is and what they believe in. Because our sexuality and religious beliefs don't change who we really are.
4. Read and write as much as possible. Understand that they are both magic.
I put this one on here because well it's Wattpad. Chances are you're on here because you love to read, you love to write, or you love both.
Remember to take some time out of your day to read and/or write. Even if you only read a chapter or you only write a few sentences.
5. Take classes that are meaningful and/or that you demonstrate a passion for
