“Jamie, take Jordan and run!” My dad yelled.
Everything was eerily silent, but it was loud – there were no other sounds other than fire burning the house down around us. Jamie might have been old enough to realise the right thing to do, but I wasn’t.
“Daddy! No, come with us!” I cried.
“No, baby girl. Go with Jamie, we’ll be right behind you.”
“Daddy!” I cried again.
The heat and the smoke burned my eyes and chest, it was getting harder to breathe, but I didn’t care. I want mummy and daddy, and my brothers and sisters.
Daddy turned to Jamie. “Get her out of here. Save yourselves.”
Jamie grabbed my hand and pulled me away. I was too little and too weak to fight back, so I let him drag me.
“Daddy!” I pleaded.
“Don’t worry baby girl, we’ll be right behind you. I promise.”
I continued to let the tears stream down my face as Jamie pulled me with him. As we ran through the kitchen and towards the lounge room, I looked back to see if daddy was following… he lied. He wasn’t right behind us, he was no where to be seen, he broke his promise. That made me cry harder.
I started to pull against Jamie, wanting to go back and pull daddy with us.
“Jordy, no, come on. We have to get out of here.” Jamie yelled over the crackling fire all around us.
“What about daddy?” I clutched onto Jamie’s arm, finding it harder to see with all the smoke.
“He wants to protect us. He’ll be right behind us, don’t worry.”
I stumbled over my own small feet as Jamie pulled me faster than my legs could carry me. My tears made me vision go blurry, but I couldn’t see anything anyway, the smoke was too thick – I could barely make out Jamie’s foot in front of mine.
“Jamie?” Someone called as we ran into the lounge room.
“Mummy!” I cried.
I pulled my hand out of Jamie’s and ran to mummy, throwing my arms around her hips because that was the highest I could reach, with my head resting on her stomach.
“Mummy…” I sobbed.
“Baby, go with Jamie, get out of here.”
“No mummy! Come with us. You have to come with us. Daddy lied, you can’t lie too.”
“Baby, it’ll be okay.” Mummy soothed. “Just go with your brother. Mummy loves you, okay? Remember that. I love you with all my heart, baby girl.”
“I love you, mummy.” I squeezed her tighter.
I heard a cracking sound come from above us. I looked up to see cracks forming in the ceiling, they were almost connected. I watched in fascination as the cracks continued to grow towards each other. Mummy saw too, but her reaction scared me.
“Jordan run! Move!”
I frowned at her, confused. Why can’t I watch the cracks? Before I knew what was happening, mummy pushed me away. I fell against Jamie. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me away from mummy. He knew what was happening. Why isn’t he telling me? There was a loud crack, followed by a bang and a cloud of dust. I coughed and hid my face in Jamie’s shirt, not knowing what happened.
