It had been a very rough photoshoot day. See, Kirstie was modeling to rebrand her friend, Avi's photography company, and something about it wasn't working.
"Avi, we've been at this for hours. Nothing's working." Kirstie sighed and sat down on the chair they had set for some pictures.
"I know, I know, but let's try it with this camera." He began adjusting the lense on the new camera he picked up.
"Avi, you've tried three different lenses and two different cameras!"
"Okay, but we haven't tried this one. Ready?"
"I'm ready." Kirstie half smiled and they continued the photoshoot.
Twenty minutes later, neither one of them still liked the photos. "Let's take a lunch, okay?"
Kirstie nodded and grabbed the salad she'd stashed in the mini fridge before the shoot began.
They both sat in the middle of the studio and started to eat the food they had brought along with them, and they also talked about everything and nothing.
Kirstie and Avi had been friends for a while. She always helped him by modeling for his photography company, and he always helped her with her restaurant by being her "professional taste tester".
"Is a salad enough?" Avi asked her.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, a salad is a bunch of leaves and stuff, and you're probably starving, we've been at this forever."
"Oh, yeah, I'm good, I'm good." She chuckled and was about to continue the conversation until her phone started ringing. "I've got to take this."
"Go ahead." Avi smiled and took another bite of the sandwich he had.
Kirstie smiled and took the call, walking into the hallway of the studio for quiet.
After while, she still wasn't back, and Avi went to go check on her. Phone calls don't take this long, do they? He walked towards the hallway she went to, and stopped halfway there. He heard her yelling and crying into her phone at someone. Avi cautiously walked closer to the hallway and realized she chose the one hallway with the burnt out lights.
This gave him a great idea.
He took his camera off of his shoulder and started snapping a few pictures of her shillouete. Now, did he feel bad about this? Yeah, sniping your friends isn't polite, but this was Kirstie we're talking about, and she always looked so perfect.
She hung up the call, and before she could notice him, Avi ran back to where they were eating. They finished lunch in silence, besides Kirstie's sniffs here and there.
Must've been a rough call. Avi thought and sighed at her sad expression.
He snapped out of his thoughts when she stood up and started leaving the area. "Are you done?" Avi noticed that she hadn't made a dent in her salad.
Kirstie nodded. "Not hungry." She kept her head down. "I'm going to go fix my makeup, give me like ten minutes, and we can start again, okay?"
"Actually, Kirst," Avi stopped her. "I was looking through the pictures while you were on the phone, and I'm actually starting to love a lot of them. With a bit of light editing, I think we have some great ones on our hands, so you can just take your makeup and dress off. I can show you the finished pictures in about half an hour."
"Oh, okay, are you sure."
Avi nodded and smiled. Kirstie went to the bathroom and changed from her dress into sweatpants, her curls became a messy topknot, and her made up face became completely bare. She took a few deep breaths and went back to where Avi was.
"I have the first picture done, want to see it?"
"Sure." Kirstie half smiled.
"Okay, cool. I'm printing them now, so it's going to be a second, but..." Kirstie nodded and sat at Avi's feet. "You good? You seem a bit shaken." Avi asked.
"Yeah, I'm good. My fiancee and I just got into a bit of an argument. It's okay though."
"Sure?"
"I'm sure."
Avi friendly kissed the top of her head. "You'd tell me if you weren't, right?"
"Of course." They both sat in silence for a moment before Kirstie spoke up. "Avi, you don't think I'm ugly, do you?"
"No, not at all. Why would you even say something like that?" He suddenly became very defensive.
"Because my fiancee is always saying stuff like that to me, and now you're holding cameras to my face, and--"
"Woah, if the man degrades you, why are you marrying him?" Avi touched her shoulder.
She sighed, brushing a few stray tears from earlier from her cheeks. This was obviously a hard argument.
"Hey, pictures are printed." Avi said, trying to brighten the mood.
"I want to see it!" Kirstie lit up and turned to the printer.
"Wait, let me write the date on the back." He grabbed a Sharpie and scribbled on the back of the photograph before handing it to her.
She half chuckled at the picture. It was one of the ones that Avi secretly took of her from the hall. "You sniped me!" She laughed. "But it's a beautiful picture."
And it was. The dim lighting allowed to see her facial expressions, but allowed also for the bright red of her lipstick to be the focal point.
She flipped the picture over to the back and almost started crying again. On the back of the picture, Avi had written:
