Recently read the novel again, so enjoy this 2018 Gatsby AU 😘

"Dang, Kirstin." My friend, Scott, stated as I came out of my room in a short red dress and high heels.

"I'll take it as a compliment." I chuckled as he spun me around.

"You're looking very Kaplan on a very Maldonado budget." He laughed.

"Kaplan? Who's Kaplan?"

Scott looked at me like I had three heads. "You don't know who Kaplan is? Avi Kaplan?"

"No."

"What the--Kirstin! He's the richest man in New York City! He throws parties every single weekend! Some being known to last until Tuesday!"

"Wait...does this Kaplan guy live in Manhattan?"

"Yeah."

"Is the penthouse that's right behind my apartment his?" I tilted my head.

"You're freaking kidding me."

"What?"

"YOU'VE LIVED NEXT TO AVI KAPLAN FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS AND IT'S NEVER OCCURRED TO YOU TO MAYBE CHECK IT OUT?!" Scott scolded me.

"I mean--" I tried to defend myself.

"Nope, stop talking. We both look great, let's go to a Kaplan party tonight." Scott grabbed my hand.

"Scott, we're on our way to a very important dinner! I could get my art in three huge museums. I have to look good for these exects! And you promised to be my date." I pulled in the other direction.

"Screw a museum, there's millions in The City. You'll find another."

"I will not!" Scott resisted and pulled my arm towards my back door. "Scott!" I whined as I tried to dig my heel in the carpet.

"Shut up, Kirstie! We're going!"

I growled at him, knowing that there would be no other argument with the man.

And off we were to a Kaplan party.

Swanky.

Now, that's not a word anyone says in this day and age...but...Kaplan's house was pretty swanky.

"Okay, this is a cool place, let's go to the dinner now before we're late." I started to head to the door.

"Nope." He pulled me back.

I groaned again and turned back to the party. "Can I just say hello to this Kaplan guy and go?"

"Not sure if that's gonna happen, Kirst. Nobody's ever seen him."

"So a bunch of strangers just show up to a stranger's penthouse and party?"

"Precisely. Let's go get some drinks." Scott smiled.

I slowly followed behind him until I accidentally bumped into someone. "Oh, I'm sorry."

"No, no, I apologize for being a horrible host." I looked up at him. "Hi, I'm Avi Kaplan."

I met his eyes, and they were the kind of eyes that made me wonder just how many individual dollars he's spent on this life of his, but he also had this grin that made me realize that he's lost count.
